Mission to Planet Earth: A Digital History

NASA’s activities in space have brought new knowledge of the Earth, inspiring new ways of thinking about humanity and the planet. However, many people aren’t aware that NASA studies the Earth in addition to other planets. Your challenge is to tell stories of NASA’s Earth science enterprise using interactive digital tools. This will test your technical skills and your ability to think like a historian or educator.

Space+ Gamified Learning App

Summary

Space+ is a gamified learning app designed to empower future generations to pursue STEM education and explore careers in space technology.Take the flight director seat and be in charge of mission control with interactive tasks, rich data simulations, and earn points to compete with other users!Think you're a space enthusiast? Well try your chance at the leaderboard with hard challenges against AI players.Learn about NASA missions to advance human spaceflight and earth sciences, take a deep dive into what it takes to become an astronaut, and explore the different flight systems that make up a spacecraft.Space+ is designed to be ultimate fun and love of learning for all ages!

How I Addressed This Challenge

Space+ app overcomes the difficult barriers in learning about earth sciences, space technology, and engineering by bringing together past and future missions into a high-level dashboard.

It puts a fun twist with tasks, learning quizzes, and mini-games to successfully complete NASA missions. By engaging with the app, you're learning about NASA history, it's collaboration with ecosystem partners like SpaceX, and a human perspective of what it takes to become an astronaut!

We're working on modules for space systems that takes a real-world look at all the data emitted by different instrumentation and technologies in spacecraft with rich simulations.

This is an incredible start and we're excited about the future potential of this gamified learning app.

How I Developed This Project

Our team has designed and architected the app with modern React web technology to be compatible on any device with the same visual experience.

The app uses a flexible framework to allow for easy and creative extensibility of learning modules, tasks, quizzes, and mini games.

We're seeking to publish the project on Github and have a community driven effort of creating these learning resources. No serious coding required to contribute!

History is diverse, complex, and there's alot of opportunity for including numerous past and future missions to get people excited about space technology.

Our early alpha has been published online, and we're looking forward to what the future holds.

Programming Languages and Tools:

React.js, Gatbsy.js, TypeScript, Styled Components, Github, Figma Design, Amazon Web Services, AWS Amplify

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We've leveraged NASA's image gallery and details on its collaboration with ecosystem partners published on NASA.gov.

For rich and interactive simulations, we've looked at NASA and SpaceX launch programs, the different data-driven metrics used in mission control and are currently working on expanding this capability.

We hope the app will become the go-to place for learning about past and future missions.
