Mission to Planet Earth: A Digital History

NASA’s activities in space have brought new knowledge of the Earth, inspiring new ways of thinking about humanity and the planet. However, many people aren’t aware that NASA studies the Earth in addition to other planets. Your challenge is to tell stories of NASA’s Earth science enterprise using interactive digital tools. This will test your technical skills and your ability to think like a historian or educator.

Space++

Summary

Space ++ is an application for astronomy lovers, where you can find the history of NASA and learn more about the various space missions carried out by NASA. In addition, all news involving astronomy arrives directly in the news feed.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The challenge chosen was “Mission to Planet Earth: A Digital History”, and its main point is to tell the story of the sciences developed by NASA.

Due to the growth of groups that disapprove of science, along with the easy spread of information, some of them harm science as a whole. Therefore, the subject becomes more and more extremely important every day.

Thus, through the application it is possible to access a little of the history of astronomy, and receive news related to NASA and its missions, with a reliable source.

We hope to reach an audience that normally doesn’t know about science and the only source of information comes from cell phones, so they can receive information in a more dynamic and more attractive way.

How We Developed This Project

After several hours of brainstorming, we faced the current problem of disinformation in the area of science, soon the team started to look for solutions to this problem.

The solution created was an application with browsable tabs with information from trusted sources. The solution is neither the largest nor the most complex, but necessary.

MarvelApp was used to create the mockups, thinking about a SPA (single page application), to facilitate user navigation. For the feed, RSS (Really Simple Syndication) will be used to search only the necessary and important in an easy way.

Our team found some difficulty in solving some problems such as the news feed, but everyone was able to solve it.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The data for the histories of all the missions were taken directly from NASA, apart from the news feed, the entire application is based on the open data that NASA provides. The feed will feed on news from NASA and other popular scientific sites.
