An automated solution for recovering floating plastics from the oceans & ARPOP

Summary

ARPOP stands for Autonomous Recovery Platform for Oceanic Plastics, it is a vessel that can autonomously travel to a given location where floating plastic have been located, and once there it can recover the waste and transport back the load to the shore, where it can be processed or recycled.

How I Addressed This Challenge

Current system that have been design and proposed for solving the macro-plastics pollution in the sea are based in a static design that works like a floating barrier that contains the plastic using the natural currents and uses a mechanism similar to a conveyor belt to extract those solids from the water and then those need to be deposited in a ship that needs to travel back and forth with the load.

The advantages of ARPOP over these systems are:

  • Does not required the intervention of humans, and by consequence is a fully automated solution.
  • Is not a static gigantic structure that requires a massive investment.
  • It does not require other cargo ships to be involved, reducing the complexity of the system and simplifying the process.
  • Allows the targeting of different accumulations of solid pollutants, as is not limited to a specific location, making the system more dynamic and adaptable.
  • The scalability of the system relies on progressively increasing the amount of vessels, which are notably more affordable than the installation of more massive collection system that do not offer an integral solution to the problem, but just to the collection process.
