A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

Aeolus | Sustaining Future

Summary

Air Pollution, not only being a major contributor to Global Warming and affecting our lives indirectly, According to WHO it also leads to around 8 Million deaths Globally each year. Aeolus was built as a Multi-tool, which addresses Economical, Physical and also Environmental impacts of this major global issue, with one motive of making our planet's future Sustainable.

How I Addressed This Challenge

Aeolus is a multi-tool acting as a guide to just anyone who wishes to bring change in our environment and want to bring change.

As we identify, there are three problems issue of Air Pollution faces.

  1. Improper or No Measurement Devices
  2. Usage of Non Renewable Energy
  3. Non Renewal of Environmental Policies

Aeolus uses datasets like Google's Mobility Report, Historical Dataset of GDP, World's Avg Temperature, CO2 and NO2 Emissions to forecast the respective data for a week from current date. Not only does it aim to predict but also indicates policymakers, environmentalists or any organization visualize changing weather conditions. Mobility Report helped us gain understanding of the effect of lesser vehicular movement hence our goal to reduce Vehicular Emissions.

NASA's Sentinel and Landsat Satellites constantly communicate huge chunks of data, which consist of Wind Flow Progression, Solar Impact on a given area and other changing Weather conditions.

We hope to achieve a greater awareness through this interactive website, We aim to provide the users a deeper understanding how environment is changing and We plan to guide those who wish to bring change by providing ease of access to visualizations of changing Weather Conditions

How I Developed This Project

Using datasets like Google's Mobility Report, Historical Dataset of GDP, World's Avg Temperature, CO2 and NO2 Emissions to forecast the respective data for a week from current date is done by LSTM Model (from Tensorflow Module) in Google's Colaboratory Notebook.

NASA's Sentinel and Landsat provide datasets of wind flow and solar reflectance in a given week which can be modeled and predictions can be made the same way above. This enables us to understand how and where we can capture and store Wind and Solar Energy, thus reducing our dependancy on conventional Coal Energy.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Tri-Agency Dashboard by NASA, ESA, JAXA - https://eodashboard.org/helped a lot to gain understanding Air Quality trend given the COVID-19 Pandemic. This facilitates us to understand the factor of Mobility in this issue.

NASA's Global Sulphar Dioxide Monitoring Page - https://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/ helps understanding NO2 emissions in the selected regions in the project.

NASA's Sentinal and Landsat Images - https://developers.google.com/earth-engine/datasets/can be processed and used to demonstrate Wind Flow, Solar Reflectance and changing Weather Conditions.
