A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

STUDY OF AIR QUALITY IN LOCKDOWN PERIOD

Summary

We worked on the Solution of the Challenge of One Health Approach. We did an analysis on Air Quality; pre and post lockdown in the Indo Gangetic Region of Northern India and tried to find out the possible reasons for the 2020 Anomaly. We studied the benefits of improved Air Quality on the heath of individuals. We have also coded an AQI Calculator which calculates AQI of a certain region, and accordingly gives health statements, cautionary statements, guiding whether or not they should be concerned for their health when going out.

How We Addressed This Challenge

From ages, World Organisations are working in the direction to reduce air pollution and make earth, a better place for living. But Amid of lockdown due to Covid-19 pandemic, it has reduce pollution to a very low levels and improve atmospheric conditions for recovery of several serious health problems.

Despite of application of Stringent vehicle norms in Europe and India, they were suffering from major pollutions hazard, no improvement was seen in pollution levels.

Our Study over Air Quality Index of Delhi and decrease in number of cases of COPD and respiratory disorders has proven that lockdown has made an huge impact on population health and act as purifier of atmosphere. AQI Calculator has also a great advantage as it gives us a picture of atmospheric conditions across the globe and gives assessments of nearest location pollution level, so that we can correlate the health condition of that area.

How We Developed This Project

7 million deaths across the globe due to plummeting air quality, respiratory, cerebral, and vascular disorders and furthermore, 9 out of 10 people breathe air that exceeds WHO guidelines are the prime causes that inspired us to choose this challenge.

The approach is to collect data from authentic sources like NASA, WHO, CPCB, etc. to perform deep analysis and study. For the AQI calculator, we have used programming languages HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We have also used the CSS framework Bootstrap and VSCode editor.

Our team worked tirelessly to highlight this issue on a global scale and hope that all the government considers in sync with the severity of the problem. Remember no men strange and no countries foreign.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project
  • ยท We used NASA Worldview to see the satellite images of India for AOD Values and Precipitation Rate.
  •   Our Project revolved around an article on NASA Earth Observatory titled: Airborne Particle Levels Plummet in Northern India.
  • We used eodashboard for looking of NO2 levels in Delhi.
