A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

Fresh Air Clean Future

Summary

Every year 7 million people die in the world due to air pollution. In addition, about 4 million people are affected by outdoor air pollution. Our lifespan is becoming shorter. During the pandemic process we were in because of COVİD-19, the data showed us that the mortality rate is high in regions with high air pollution. During the pandemic process, there was a serious clearance in the air due to COVİD-19 reduction strategies. But when the pandemic ended, an increase of air pollution inevitable. Especially in big cities, the share of air pollution caused by motor vehicles in total pollution exceeds 70% .We developed a practical filtration system to prevent air pollution from transportation.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide gases coming out of the exhaust are very harmful to the environment, especially to the air. If we can reduce this pollution emitted by vehicles as much as possible, we can keep the air quality values higher. Based on this, we designed an exhaust filter that is simple to manufacture but effective and can be produced in many sizes.

Our filter consists of 3 layers: The first layer contains a PM filter to filter PM particles, the second layer contains an SCR catalyst that reduces the effect of NOx gases, and the third layer contains an oxidation catalyst that converts incoming gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxide to carbon dioxide and water.

How We Developed This Project

We decided to do this project because we thought we could reduce air pollution on our agenda. We have used various applications including Fusion360,Wix,Plotagon,Camtasia.Of course, we had some probems, but we overcame those situations by working together as a team.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We continued our work by using COVİD-19 and air pollution datas which we received from NASA.
