Global Nominee

A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

EcoVision

Summary

So far we have been able to make a study about the correlation between public health, air pollution and COVID-19. We have used python for creating plots and analyzing data given to us by NASA spaceappschallenge. We came with the conclusion that with people staying home because of the pandemic, there have been less cases of death from polluted air, as the air was not polluted.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project was for analyzing data and finding the connection between the global pandemic, air pollution (specifically NO2) and public health. It is important because many lives are lost annually from diseases that come from polluted air. So we will continue to make a web based application for finding and analyzing data that is related to air pollution. It will be informative, will show people the main polluters and also make predictions for the future, according to data so far.

How We Developed This Project

Our team was inspired to choose this challenge because air pollution is a giant threat to the world, and it needs to be dealt with in order to make our planet sustainable. Approximately 7 million people die per year because of polluted air, and this is for sure a serious issue.

So far we have used the python libraries NumPy, pandas and matplotlib. We also plan to use html, css, javascript and flask, for creating the web based application. Our main challenge was finding data because there was a lack of it in the health sector.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used data from NASA to find the presence of NO2 in the air in different cities of the world. It was made super easy to find and also easy to use. I think out project was made possible because of it, as it was also the main topic of it.
