A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

GO₂ Green

Summary

Air pollution affects us and our environment in the worst way and kill 7 million person every year. So, we decided to choose this challenge and solve carbon footprint problem. Our idea is creating an application which able to: 1.Calculate the carbon footprint percentage of every action we do in our daily life. if the percentage exceeds the normal limit, the application will give a warning to the user.2.The application will use NASA's maps and data, If the user decides to go to a specific location, the application will use NASA maps and data to know the percentage of pollution there and give instructions to the user.3.The app will give advice about reducing carbon footprint to users.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Seven million people die every year because of Air pollution. It is a huge issue facing our Earth, harms environment, people, animals, plants and all ecosystem not only these it also negativity effects country's economy.

Our challenge is study the negative effect of air pollution and innovate an idea helps to solving it.

So, we develop a mobile application to calculate the carbon footprint for any person.

Why did we choose carbon footprint specially?

Because carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, methane, etc) released to atmosphere from human's activities. When greenhouse gases increase in atmosphere, the temperature increases and that causes the climate change which is one of the main reasons of air pollution.

For that, we decided to make an application that calculate our carbon footprint as when we know the amout of carbon footprint that we released that helps us to reduce this amount. Thus, we will reduce air pollution. And we do that by linking our application with website that calculate the carbon footprint by an easy way which calculate your actions as points for example if you ride a bike, you will consume 2 points, while if you drive a car, you will consume 10 points and the normal range is 60 points per month.

Our applications are also will send a warning to the users if their carbon footprint exceeds the normal range.

The application will use NASA's maps and data to determine the places and the percentage of pollution in each place on the map. By way, we will analyze it and put it as simple data on the map.

And the last thing, there will be an advice every day for users to help them reduce their carbon footprint.

Our goal that we want to achieve is every person that use our application reduce their carbon footprint to 2 tons per year or less than that as the average amout of carbon footprint of each person globally is 4 tons per year.

How We Developed This Project

As air pollution gets worse day after day, it affects us and our environment in the worst way. And it is now a very series problem threatening us after taking the life of 7 million people around the world. But we still cannot say it is totally beyond our grasp.

That is way me and my team have decided to help reduce it by starting with ourselves and giving the chance to others to change their habits and help make our planet a better place to live in. And that is way we developed our project.

We used java script and MIT app inventor to create our app and we used Adobe Illustrator to design. We will add our app in play store when finishing. so, anyone can download it.

Although we had some problems attracting people to track most of their daily activities each day, we got over it by using some attractive design and encouraging quotes.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used NASA's carbon dioxide maps for spreading awareness between our app's users as well as Earth-Now app created by NASA(JPL) to help provide them with the latest changes in our atmosphere.
