A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

Analysis of Air Pollution and its Impact on KlaipÄ—da

Summary

Klaipeda is one of the touristic and famous city in Lithuania which is located across the Baltic Sea. The residents are leaving their houses near the port due to the dangerous chemicals that are being released to open air and affecting their health significantly and impossible to resist to continue living in those areas. This project heavily focuses on awareness of air pollution and immediate action on this issue by local companies before causing those areas to be impossible to survive and turn into wastelands.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Air pollution is becoming one of the major issues all across the globe and we would like to provide solutions to local people in Klaipeda by letting them to have an access to an open-source data to monitor the pollution in the residential area. This data can be used to the people to approach the local governments, municipalities, Environmental Committees etc.,

How We Developed This Project

We were inspired to work on this issue because air pollution is one of the biggest problem before Covid-19, our approach to this project was to increase air quality in local areas, which are the most populated . And one of our teammate was in Warsaw few months ago when he was having a conversation with concerned business men and environmentalists and he found that there is very less chances for volunteers/local people to take data from the polluted zones. And we found that there were same issues in Klaipeda as it located in the port and industrialized place there has been a problem where people started moving out of their houses due to air pollution so we took this city as an example to showcase our solution.

We used JavaScript as the main coding language for the website, we used a hosting platform called Heroku and we developed JavaScript for mobile devices using java in Android studio.

For CubeSat we use an set of onboard flight computers, Infrared sensors, communication antennas and receiving channel from the grounds.

Problems and Achievements

Trying to finding and integrating website was hard. We had struggles in combining in local health dataset with local air pollution dataset. Our long time goal is we achieved creating open source data so people can have access to know their air pollution levels across different cities in the globe.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We have used data from European State Agency, Lithuania health data,

Space Agency data in order to know numbers with air pollution and correlated with local health data. CubeSat data has taken from the site with open source.
