A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

JAMIQ _ A movement to aware people about air polltion and the role of NASA to reduce it .

Summary

The main focus of my project is to make people aware about air pollution and NASA's role to reduce it. Worldwide fatality rate due to air pollution is 7 million and NASA shows high level concern towards it . NASA studies and monitors air pollution and initiates projects and policies to reduce air pollution. NASA : Tracked six major pollutants through satellites , collaborates with researchers to teach them how to use NASA data and products , helps to design solutions for it,recently initiated two projects in US that reduced deaths caused by air pollution by half and launched missions like TEMPO to measure pollutants in US and MAIA to improve understanding of particulate matter .

How I Addressed This Challenge

My challenge is " A one health approach " in which I was supposed to explain effects of of air pollution using both Earth and health sciences. According to this challenge my project has 5 objectives :

1. What is air pollution ?

2. Outdoor air pollution

3. Air pollution and health

4 . How NASA helps us to breathe clean .

5. Covid 19 and air pollution.

I have developed a presentation for public awareness in which I addressed the challenge by explaining effects of air pollution using both Earth and health sciences . This project contains information about health effects of air pollution , its effects on Earth and climate and explains the role of NASA in reducing air pollution . It explains how NASA's observations and discoveries about air pollution help other researchers to work on it.

This project is actually an awareness programme that would help people know about severe effects of air pollution and how NASA deals with it.

W.H.O data shows that 9 out of 10 breathe air containing high level of pollutants and there are 7 million premature deaths every year largely as a result of heart diseases , lung cancer , acute respiratory infections etc .

18% deaths are due to respiratory infections and 6% are due to lung cancer . In 2016 , 91 % of population was living in the places where WHO levels were not met. Observations show that there is increase in urinary bladder cancer as well due to increase in air pollution .

NASA shows a major concern towards this serious issue . NASA studies air pollution , monitors it through satellites and initiates projects , policies and collaborations.

NASA has a great participation in reducing air pollution, especially NASA's satellite observation is the great idea to make the air clean . Monitoring air pollution level is very important for better control of air pollution and eventually improve air quality To improve air quality it is important to to know what contributes to polluting the air and which pollutants in the air we breathe. Fortunately NASA has a large network of air monitoring instruments designed to measure this " nose -level" pollution from ozone to particulate .

NASA makes there discoveries and data publically available so that it can help other researchers who are working for the betterment of our environment. That's why Tracey Holloway , Gaylord Nelson Distinguished professor of Environmental studies and Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences , looks beyond the skies by using NASA satellites to see the global picture of air quality issues from space .

Holloway leads the NASA Health and Air Quality Applied Sciences Team (HAQAST, "hay-kast"), a program dedicated to solving real - world public health and air quality problems using NASA data . The team conducts cutting _edge research with the goal of demonstrating the utility of these NASA satellite data for health and air quality organisations. Holloway has led the team since 2016 , building on her previous role as deputy director of NASA Air Quality Applied Sciences Team (AQAST, "ay-kast").

HAQAST is a unique in the sense that it is a NASA applied sciences team .NASA science teams are typically centred around a specific instruments, with the goal of advancing science using that instruments's data , but being an applied science team , HAQAST is focused on the potential data users and the problems where satellite data and other NASA resources can have the biggest impact . This mission allows the team to draw from a wider suite of NASA data and tools to best serve air quality and public health applications .

Holloway said this unique approach to research and knowledge transfer has made a big difference. "We are conducting research that really pushed the envelope in terms of how NASA data can help society ", Holloway said."Many of our research ideas emerged from public partners who had never before used satellite data , but through back and forth conversation , we come up with a new question that might be answerable _ that's research, with the potential to really make a difference for public health and the environment."

Already the satellite data use in air quality management is becoming more frequent , due to HAQAST research and communication efforts . Holloway hopes these trends will continue and that satellite data can used to its full potential.

"Satellite data is one of the most existing tools and it's the backbone of what we do at HAQAST,"Holloway said . " I think we need to be on the frontier of this kind of change as we tackle air quality management to make sure the maximum practical benefit is being realised."

It is important to aware people about different environmental issues and let them know that NASA is not only about stars and planets but it works in other fields of science as most of the people are not aware about different fields NASA works in . As long as the people come to know about pollution issues and NASA's work , we can join number of people with different ideas in the NASA missions. Bringing the public in on the conversation can foster the goal.NASA data , discoveries products , satellite observations can inspire the people to explore much more and can bring people with golden ideas together to create projects and policies to make our environment clean. Discoveries on pollution would help the researchers and other stakeholders in planning right set of tools to control pollution . It would also inspire the students like us who aim to be engineers , scientists , astronauts and future NASA workers to explore and search more and would would create excitement of learning in them. This data is also helpful in getting little contributions like people who want to make there society better would intiate some small level projects in there society and would aware other people of there locality about severe effects of air pollution and how NASA data can be used to reduce it .

I Hope that now on people will explore more from NASA data and discover and would contribute to make the environment clean.

How I Developed This Project

I always wanted to shift from my daily life of studies and do something professional . I wanted to explore more about universe, about space and especially about my own self. My daily routine and the academic system never allowed me to explore my real potential. I have never realised the magnitude of my knowledge much the same as how gravity was no big deal, until Newton decided to point it out and name it. But when I got to know about this space aap challenge, I totally got fascinated and my inner will of adding colours of practicals and professionalism in my life inspired me to join NASA space app challenge. And when I began to work for it I explored a lot about universe ,about environment, about space and especially a lot about my own potential. I discovered that I can do many things that I had no idea before I can do. I am also very fond to serve my society and thought it is a great opportunity for me to contribute to my people and a little to the NASA missions.

As i got into the 11th grade and started to come out of the comfort zone , I began to realise that everything I did had an impact on the world around me . For me this thought is inspirational to know know that I can choose to act in a positive way towards all things around me and it does have an effect. I believe that change can be made through positive actions and I want to take positive actions to change my self , to change the people and to change the world. I want to make this world a better place by being a better person and by making right choices. And joining NASA space app challenge is my first towards it .

Approaching a lot of teachers , known engineers , learning link making and mixture of lots of hard work developed this project . It consumed a lot of time but in the way I had a lot of achievements as well. I learned about the Earth, about the universe , about environment and especially about NASA's efforts in the fields other than astronomy.l got to know that NASA works in almost every field of science from a single cell to the whole universe. Astronauts in the orbit conduct sceintific research. Satellites help scientists learn more about Earth. Space probes study the solar system and beyond. New developments improve air travel and other aspects of flight. In addition to those major missions NASA does many other things. The agency shares what it learns so that it's information can make life better worldwide. Like companies can use NASA discoveries to create new spinoff products.

NASA helps teachers to prepare students like us who aim to be engineers, scientists, astronauts and future NASA workers . I hope that with the help of NASA we will be the adventures and continue exploration of solar system and universe. NASA has tradition of investing in programes and activities that inspire students, educators ,families , communities in the excitement of explorations. NASA offers training to help teachers learn new ways of teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics. NASA is not only an agency but a movement to inculcate scientific approach in people.

Thank you NASA for working limitelessly for us. Thank you for your every effort you put to make this world a better place to live in. And especially thank you for involving students like us in the NASA missions and a big thanks for exciting us for learning more.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

NASA makes all its discoveries publically available so that everyone gets benefited . This data is used by researchers and scientists to meet to specific need of people . Students also use the data to explore universe.I also used this data in my project to show the severe effects of air pollution and to aware people about different types of environmental issues that are very serious and how NASA works on them .I also used the satellite images by NASA that would help people discover about level of air pollution and would help them to fight against it
