Our challenge clearly stated :”Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.” And that is precisely what we did at Naseem!
We created the first platform integrating air quality tracking, Covid-19 statistics dashboard and awareness guideline as well as travel regulations and restrictions, pollutants effects on health and environment, weather forecasting, contact details of waste collecting and recycling facilities, eco friendly startups, and a growing database to awareness raising videos about the lethal effects of air pollution in Arabic and English!
“Interdisciplinary approach” was the phrase that sparked our innovation. Luckily, Our team has skills encompassing all the challenge aspects engineering students, medical student, and a talented designer and video editor.
Through our early research phase; we were astonished by the wide variety of air quality and satellite data available online yet ends up not used. And as we checked the most professional platforms tackling the air pollution and air quality issues, we learned that a few of them provided any link between air quality and health, and those who demonstrated the link between air quality and health illustrated the relationship in a very complex manner that the average user will struggle to understand. But then what is the point?! Controlling air pollution and clearly understanding its health risks should be widely understood in order to take any fruitful actions and decisions.
Everyone should understand how disastrous air pollution is.
Everyone must take an action to limit air pollution and to protect themselves and their loved ones from its effects.
Everyone deserves to be informed.
Everyone. Regardless of their mother tongue, race, scientific knowledge , and age!
What we learned as we went through the early research phase was depressing : very few platforms and organizations addressed the link between air pollution and health, none of these platforms provided information in Arabic (in fact most of the information was solely in English), most of these platforms require scientific background to be used, and none of these platforms paid attention to the growing evidence linking poor air quality to wider spread of Covid-19 and poor prognosis.
Thus in Naseem we solved all of these problems.
(Please note that due to the hackathon’s short duration we weren’t able to fully develop a working website; however, we described all of our features and potential features and their uses. )
To begin with, we ensured all Naseem features are user friendly and the data to be easily interpreted by all individuals. This is demonstrated in our “pollutants and their effects” section, charts, infographs, informative videos, “take action” section, and “why you should take action” section.
Naseem catered for the needs of individual users using the site for personal knowledge , researchers wanting to learn more using our charts and Covid-19 dashboard, students wanting to learn more about pollutants effects, travelers wanting to learn more about travel guidelines and travel restrictions during Covid-19,and patients with chronic health conditions wanting to learn more about the effects of air pollution on their health and what precautions they could take. Moreover, our videos database provides links to a wide variety of informative videos that will help raise everyone’s awareness about air pollution risks!
The covid-19 dashboard will provides up to date covid-19 new cases, deaths, recoveries, and the total number of cases in the user’s location(this feature will be dynamic and updated spontaneously after the hackathon, we were unable to make it updated regularly due to the short hackathon time). The dashboard also provides links to WHO and CDC covid guidelines, a list of all nearby hospitals that hospitalize covid patients in the users location, up to date information about each country’s travel restrictions and regulations as well as WHO and the CDC travel guidelines during this pandemic. And this dashboard’s gemstone our very own air quality and Covid-19 section.
Once the user clicks on air quality and covid-19; he/she will be directed to a new window having a line chart correlating the number of Covid 19 deaths with the AQI (air quality index) internationally (hopefully this feature we will be developing this feature more after the hackathon (due to the tight timing) to make it updated regularly). We believe this feature would be extremely useful to researchers over the long run; specially after the mounting evidence suggesting a strong correlation between poor air quality and higher number of Covid-19 deaths (due to preexisting poor respiratory health). As mentioned above, Naseem is for everyone! We kept in mind how could we possibly help researchers..and here we are!
This section will also provide relevant information and links about air quality and covid-19.
We also specially designed database containing waste collecting and recycling organizations, eco friendly startups, and environmental volunteering organizations. Inform, connect and change is our motto; change can’t be accomplished without informing everyone and connecting the users to those who can help them change their lifestyles to a more eco friendly way.
And because we care about “informing”, we created a database containing the adverse health effects of each of the widely available air pollutants. The user must understand the effects of air pollution so that he/she can take an action and care about it!
We even included infographs to help make the information as presentable as possible.
NASA space apps challenge gave us an exceptional opportunity to get to know one another, although we just connected online, we discovered huge potentials in ourselves, and definitely learned more!
We appreciated the value of knowledge thus created an entire section in our website called “why take action”
Once the user clicks on why take action; he/she will be presented with our collection of finely selected data sources, videos, infographs, links and much more to feed their curiosity and help them appreciate the importance of taking action to minimize air pollution! The content in this section is in Arabic and English, and has a wide variety of difficulty to suit everyone: from kids to the most experienced individuals!
We hope Naseem opens everyone’s eyes about the risks of air pollution, and be their gate to taking strong bold steps to do their part in reducing air pollution and informing others! We hope more people would be able to recycle their waste, volunteer, and buy eco friendly products! Supporting both the struggling eco friendly startups and our suffering planet!
Thanks NASA space apps for giving Naseem the chance to exist!

With all of the above kept in mind, we developed Naseem to cater the significant needs of individuals from all age groups and knowledge backgrounds.
INFORM. CONNECT. CHANGE…this is our motto!
Since this year’s hackathon is online we faced difficulties communicating our ideas and sharing our parts; however, our widely skilled team was blessed and lucky enough to be able to create Naseem!
Definitely if we had a chance to meet face to face we could have been able to further improve Naseem ; however, we are very satisfied with our final results !
We were able to create the first platform to :
· monitor air quality internationally and provide accurate thermal mapping,
· state pollutants effects and sources
· provide guidelines on how to handle and minimize the health effects of air pollution
· Developing a growing database of all environmental startups, volunteering organizations and waste recycling and collecting facilities in Egypt.
· Tracking possible correlation between Covid -19 new cases and prognosis and the air quality in the specific location
· Provide links and significant references to raise public awareness about air pollution, its effects and possible actions individuals as well as organizations could take to reduce air pollution
· Raise public awareness about the importance of satellite imaging and open source data.
ALL IN ONE PLATFORM

We used the following in creating our AQI section :
1. https://www.airnow.gov/aqi/aqi-basics/
2. https://www.airnow.gov/aqi/aqi-calculator/
3. https://www.airnow.gov/aqi/aqi-basics/using-air-quality-index/
in our why take action section
we used https://neo.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/analysis/configure.php to create our thermal map
we used https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?v=-94.24317195994432,-66.54286738175213,112.76196502635703,33.019632618247876 to create our world map
In fact, while creating Naseem we used tens of NASA datasets provided by the challenge and over 70 different data sources in general; all our data sources are listed in the relevant section in the project submission application.
