A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

Health Score, connecting you with your health

Summary

Our project consists of a website, focusing on the population of large cities and with a high incidence of COVID-19. The purpose is to inform users about concentrations of atmospheric pollutants, such as gases and particles in real time, based on the location of the individual, who may indicate their comorbidities. The site also interacts with external issues, proposing recommendations for a better lifestyle, through tips to avoid respiratory problems.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Air pollution is a major global risk to environmental health, causing about seven million deaths worldwide annually, seven times more than deaths by COVID-19. Our project, besides having an interdisciplinary approach, integrating different categories of data sets and applications to study the effects of air pollution, has a medical basis. The site has a history of gases and particles from a database from NASA's Sentinel Hub, in addition to presenting the general pollution of different atmospheric gases. It also has tips and information about COVID-19, fire outbreaks, pollutants and corals, which contribute to a more accurate control. The platform contains a DashBoard that exposes the evolution of general pollution, the history of atmospheric pollutants, additionally to the possibility of reporting the comorbidities of the user, including conduct for the prevention and promotion of health through the "Know our recommendations" tab. The solution has a ChatBot, fast and accessible, and an artificial intelligence, to solve doubts in a personalized and differentiated way. Moreover, the website has a score with a processing of the information collected through the Sentinel Hub API according to data protection laws.

How We Developed This Project

The project planning and its development is focused on the user. The trajectory was formulated with the objective of customizing the platform, facilitating access with ease and agility, making information more accessible to the user. In addition, in our project, we have chosen to use everything from articles on topics to automated means of contact (chat on the site and chat via WhatsApp). For the practical development of the project, we developed our interface with the React tool and standardized our design according to Material Design best practices. We also counted on the help of Microsoft Azure’s cognitive processing tools for our Chatbot AI. We used APIs as a source of information from several space agencies, such as NASA and ESA for the population of our Dashboard. For the administration of development, we used the best practices of the agile movement, we elaborated a backlog of tasks from the user's needs and monitor progress through a kanban created in the Trello tool.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We collect data on the presence of gases in the atmosphere and use them for the purpose of showing the user the rate of air pollutants. With the option of choosing the user’s comorbidities, such as Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus, the site informs the individual's risks according to his/her health, all occurring under data protection laws. In order to improve the results of the tool, users with respiratory diseases, who reside in regions with high pollution rates, will be warned about possible respiratory problems based on the amount of atmospheric pollutants in the area. Therefore, we were able to use space agency data (SentinelHub and EODashboard) to increase the visibility of the effects of polluting gases on the atmosphere with the effects of fires and COVID-19.
