A One Health Approach

Air pollution is a major global environmental health risk, causing an estimated seven million deaths across the globe annually. Your challenge is to take an interdisciplinary approach, using both Earth science and health science, and integrate different types of datasets and applications to study the effects of air pollution.

Covid-Pollution Relation Map

Summary

In my project I analyzed 13 countries (Italy,Spain,France,USA,Russia,India,Perù,Colombia,Argentina,Mexico,Bangladesh,Iran,Brazil). These countries are have been hit hard by the Coronavirus outbreak. I have not only analyzed the Covid alert level but also the air quality of them,9 of these countries have a very dangerous air quality. I live in Brescia and I made a lot of researches about the air quality and factories that are established in the North of Italy, in conclusion I found that Brescia in 2019 has already exceeded 50 micrograms of Pm10 per cubic meter of air for 36 days (Università di Brescia studies). The same concept applies to other countries.

How I Addressed This Challenge

My project idea was to create a website that shows the relation between Covid19 spread and the air quality. Recently scientist discovered that fine dust is responsible of covid19 spread. Virions (or "particles") of coronary viruses are spherical particles between 0.06 micron and 0.14 micron in diameter, averaging about 0.125 micron, measured by electron microscope; Dust particles are usually in the size range from about 1 to 100 µm in diameter. This means that Sars-CoV-2 can stick to fine dust. My project wants to show that a good Air Quality is important for a healthy life and it’s important to stop respiratory outbreaks.

How I Developed This Project

I firstly used Figma for a prototype design. After that I started developing the website with aHTML and Javascript. In my project the Google Map API was fundamental.

Initially I wanted to develop an IOS app but I found some difficulties with the map design.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

I used some online resources (Government websites, University studies) and the files that are available in the challenge dashboard. The Nasa's COVID-19 Data Pathfinder was fundamental to analyze the Air Pollution drop in countries like the US. I also used the air pollution stats provided by the WHO.
