Scanning for Lifeforms

This challenge addresses a pressing global need to track change in biological diversity, which is threatened by human-driven environmental change. Use space agency data to develop innovative ways to detect biological diversity on Earth, track and predict changes over time, and communicate that information to scientists and society.

Nature Traveller's Robot (NTR)

Summary

Biodiversity is very important for sustaining ecosystems. Our project focuses on an approach for restoring deteriorated ecosystems into healthy conditions. We deal with the loss of biodiversity by re-inviting the disappearing species to endangered areas through the sound emulation capacity of robot drones and ground systems. We also consider rehabilitation of burned areas through seeds sprinkling again from robot drones that function both in the air and on the ground. Satellite imagery from space agencies will help identify problems at larger scales to locate the drone and ground technologies in local areas. This will provide nexus between the Earth observation and biodiversity protection.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a robot drone that conducts research for protecting biological diversity as well as providing afforestation by sowing seeds to increase plant cover and help restore ecosystem functioning in such disabled areas. The robot drone moves with the support of previously developed software and at the same time with the help of radar antenna located between its propellers. It scans for trees, other plant forms and living things for continuously monitoring biological diversity. The robot moves away from the animals in wildlife so that it will not make any harmful effect on them. The robot drone has the capacity of counting animal populations and monitoring vegetation cover around. We intend to improve our knowledge about nature and animals for securing a conservation, protection and rehabilitation approach for the ecosystem sustainability.

How We Developed This Project

As "6 nature travellers", our major aim was to know, promote and protect nature. For achieving this target, we planned to develop an application, a tool and a management approach with which we can raise awareness of people and contribute to the efforts of preserving biological diversity. To this end, we started designing a robot drone that we plan to use for data/information gathering from ecological habitats and for taking measures to prevent the loss of biological diversity. We designed our robot with the Tinkercad software. We prepared a presentation on Powerpoint for describing our planned actions and our systematic approach. We designed a website on the sites.google platform and allocated a domain from GoDaddy hosting system for disseminating our project. Additionally, we designed our own logo with canva. We initiated to create our robot application with MIT APP Inventor tool.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Using map data shared by NASA with us, we designed our robots with different features according to the landforms of our country. In addition, we plan to use NASA's data for the application.
