Summary

Human-elephant conflict is one of the colossal environmental and socio-economic crises in rural Sri Lanka.Here, a low-cost method was developed to find the areas frequented by elephants to reduce human-elephant conflicts. We are aiming to identify the elephants' immigrate path in various periods and identify their habitat. As a further development, we hope to implement this as AI recognization system where elephant most probably in the specific time period.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We've developed a risk map module named Save the Jumbo in purpose of identifying the areas frequented with elephants due to colossal impacts occur between human and elephants. This analyses a satellite image which might help in identifying the areas due to its higher resolution with higher probability of finding elephants. We take a satellite image and process it in ERDAS IMAGINE software which we use in this case and finalize the DN values and stain the risk zones. Due to human elephant conflict innocent lives both parties have been lost year by year. We need to prevent the unawareness of people in rural areas in Sri Lanka which might cause this.

Due to human elephant conflict innocent lives both parties have been lost year by year. We need to prevent the unawareness of people in rural areas in Sri Lanka which might cause this. We used ERDAS IMAGINE as image processing software and Sublime Text as a text editor. We browsed satellite images with maximum possible resolution from Worldview - 3 and Worldview-4. It was difficult to browse relevant satellite images with resolution of 30cm.
