Scanning for Lifeforms

This challenge addresses a pressing global need to track change in biological diversity, which is threatened by human-driven environmental change. Use space agency data to develop innovative ways to detect biological diversity on Earth, track and predict changes over time, and communicate that information to scientists and society.

SPECTROMETER and AYBMAR: Detection and Prevention of wildfire and study of biological evolution

Summary

Say hello to the AYBMAR, the device that is primarily designed for the detection of wildfires. The wildfires occurring on the larger scales leaves the local citizen and residing wildlife without the shelter, homes, and food. And we are lagging in quick detection of these fires. Hence our aim is to not only allow quick detection but react quickly as well in the prevention of these fires. In addition to AYBMAR, we are focusing on recording and measuring spectra. Spectrometers are used in the study of bio-detection in space. So why not use the same technique on Earth? This would allow us to observe the elements emitted in a certain habitat and observe the changes.

How We Addressed This Challenge

In fact, we met this challenge with little difficulty. And we were looking for a way to combine our many ideas and finally we discovered a way to protect forests while simultaneously studying the biological evolution of residing bio habitants. With the help of AYBMAR we will be able to take possible precaution in prevention wildfires and with SPECTROMETER, we will be able to move forward in the same direction, addressing and observing the changes in bio habitants, their characteristics, abundance and diversity. Hence this will not only prevent deforestation but will also help to study the biological evolution in such places.

How We Developed This Project

We took this challenge because it entails the problems and solution regarding the nature, and since the nature is something that balances the ecosystem of world, we were really inspired to address the adverse effects it is facing. We started our search for one of such problems by analyzing the current phenomenon that are posing the threat to ecosystem, and while doing so we came across the idea of addressing the "rising number of wildfire cases around the globe".

Hence we moved forward thinking together and looking for information to help us in developing the project . We used several sites, including EARTHDATA, AppEEARS read many articles about recent wildfires that has occurred around the globe. After that we came up with two conceptual ideas that will be helpful in addressing this problem. However one problem that we faced while creating our project was to create a website of our project. Now since most of us were unfamiliar with programming, and creating a website as well we incorporated HTML&CSS in creating our project page instead of creating website. The aim for creating a project page was such that that we can progressively update our project in the future with our work progress.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

To come with the new idea, we had initially needed to analyze the occurrence of fire and thermal anomalies in the region of Australia and their effects on the biodiversity. Therefore we utilized the NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) to monitor this anomalies.

Using EOSDIS we observed following patterns:

  • Fires and thermal anomalies
  • Land Surface Temperature
  • Fraction of Photo synthetically Active Radiation
  • Enhanced vegetation index
  • Net Ecosystem CO2 Exchange

Apart from this we also utilized the NASA's AppEEARS to extract the above mentioned data in the analytical form, to understand the variation of theses parameters more thoroughly.
