Scanning for Lifeforms

This challenge addresses a pressing global need to track change in biological diversity, which is threatened by human-driven environmental change. Use space agency data to develop innovative ways to detect biological diversity on Earth, track and predict changes over time, and communicate that information to scientists and society.

MRMS-Mangrove Real-time Monitoring System

Summary

Mangroves are depleting rapidly. Our solution monitors the intensity of the green mangroves and the change in the blue water body level. Through image processing and colour variation we are able to predict the quality of the mangroves, probability of flood and impact of depleting mangroves and we record it in a database with the image's latitude and longitude . Our solution conserves and monitors the health of the mangroves in order to protect the blue carbon ecosystems.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We have developed a python image processing program that captures the colour intensity, the space dimension of the green canopy and blue shore line. The variation in the colour and dimension can be correlated to connect with the causes of depletion. This is again evaluated over a period of time to determine the rate at which the depletion is happening and give an alarm to all concerned authorities for rightful action.

How We Developed This Project

Sundarban forest in India is the most beautiful Green life with the most amazing biodiversity, our approach to develop the project is to PROTECT the lush green mangroves that stand strong protecting our Blue Carbon Ecosystem. Mumbai has a huge coastal line and is lined by Mangroves, But this busy city uses this shore line to dump building and infrastructural work debris in the mangroves area as there is less policing. We use python coding language and python IDLE as the software to make this project. We faced challenges with colour intensity, differential resolution and most importantly managing the processing power of our computer while running high end applications.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used different websites of NASA to collect the images of mangroves and NASA EARTH to collect images at different angles and it influenced our work at a greater extent.
