Orbital Scrap Metal – The Video Game V2.0

Orbital debris is an ever-increasing threat to space assets such as Earth observation satellites and space stations and explorers. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app and imagine the possibilities of new companies that collect orbital debris and salvage the scrap metal to manufacture new products in space.

ClearSpace Orbital Scrap Metal - The Video Game V2.0

Summary

Our project is an mobile game that educates youth about space debris in a fun and interactive way. The main goal is to raise awareness about space debris and it's dangers. When playing the game you will need to navigate space junk collector, collecting debris and avoiding different obstacles. At the end of the game you are offered to learn more about space debris on our website. Our website consists of many different facts about space debris and also offers information about current attempts to solve the space debris problem. The game is easy to understand and fun to play.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We created a mobile game that educates youth about space debris in a fun and interactive way. It is important because space debris is a growing problem and it's severity increases by day. You travel the orbit in space junk collection machine which collects space debris while avoiding obstacles such as parts of satellites and meteorites. Our goal is to raise awareness about space debris so in the future, when youth grows up they can participate in removing of space junk, so humanity can safely explore the Space.

How We Developed This Project

At the start of the hackaton, when we browsed through the challenges we stumbled upon 'Orbital Scrap Metal - The Video Game V 2.0' . That sparked an interest in us because we were confused about why NASA would offer a challenge like that in a first place. When we learned about severity and potential dangers space debris we decided that we need to inform the public because we saw that the problem is increasingly growing and if we don't do anything now then space exploration is in great danger. In development of the project we used ''BuildBox'' software to create mobile game.

We didn't have any programming or web development experience. That's why in the start we encountered a problem with game development itself but we overcame that and created the app and website in less than 48 hours.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used information in NASA's websites to learn about space debris and existing efforts to remove it as well as the methods that NASA is using right now. Also we used facts about debris to put on our website which you can access from mobile app.
