Global Finalist

Orbital Scrap Metal – The Video Game V2.0

Orbital debris is an ever-increasing threat to space assets such as Earth observation satellites and space stations and explorers. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app and imagine the possibilities of new companies that collect orbital debris and salvage the scrap metal to manufacture new products in space.

Debris Destroyers

Summary

We have developed a Unity game where you collect debris and turn it into profit. The main game allows you to control a spaceship. There is lots of debris (e.g. broken satellites) orbiting around Earth and you collect these by hitting them. The economy menu allows players to sell debris and buy upgrades. Debris is broken down into metal, rock and electronics. It used to make a variety of items (some realistic like new rocket parts and some futuristic like habitat parts). The user can also buy upgrades. Currently, this isn’t functional but our aim would be to have a variety of real life collection methods (such as a net or harpoon) and potential future solutions (such as a gravity gun).

How We Addressed This Challenge

We have developed a game that allows players to explore the possibility of commercial debris harvesting in a fun and engaging way. We allow players to see the ways of potentially collecting the debris and what this can be turned into. We hope that players will then think of the benefits and drawbacks of each and potentially come up with their own unique idea to solve the problem. We have also included a section which shows the countries mainly responsible for this debris in an effort to get them to fund more research into debris collection

How We Developed This Project

We decided to choose this project partly since space debris is a major problem we will face in the future. We also did it since we thought making a game sounded like a fun task. We mainly used Unity for the game (with C# to do all the coding). We used Blender to create some of assets used and Openshot to create our video. We did have a major problem of a lack of time to create the game however, we are still proud overall of what we have accomplished and how much we learned about coding and editing.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We researched what types of debris are in orbit around our planet and chose the assets accordingly. We also decoded the Space Birds data in order to see what countries contributed the most to orbiting objects (we recognise that this is all objects, not just debris but it is a useful indicator of who is responsible).
