Orbital Scrap Metal – The Video Game V2.0

Orbital debris is an ever-increasing threat to space assets such as Earth observation satellites and space stations and explorers. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app and imagine the possibilities of new companies that collect orbital debris and salvage the scrap metal to manufacture new products in space.

Space Junk Removal Task for G A M E R S!

Summary

Our project was designed to make notice of an ever growing issue in space. Space junk and other materials are floating around in space and are posing a large threat to satellites and other space objects. These pieces of junk are also making the exiting of Earth's orbit more and more complicated as more junk is left. This junk is created from left over spaceships and other objects that left behind materials that were of no use to them. Our project was creating a game that shows to the users of this problem. By showing this problem to others, we can make notice of this huge problem and encourage people to think of solutions and help all of us solve this!

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a video game of a small space ship that shoots space junk such as, nuts and bolts, robots, and metal pieces. Showing people that this problem exists is incredibly important as these objects could interfere in a lot of things that may be run in space. The game shows to the player of what a horrible problem this is. The game runs using Python and achieves its sprites from the arcade module. As a group we hope to inspire others who see our game to inform everyone of this horrible issue and how we as a society need to solve it.

How We Developed This Project

Our team decided to choose this challenge due to our already existing knowledge of this topic as well as our predicted enjoyability. Our approach to making this project was to first start generating ideas and picking our topic, the next part of the process was beginning the coding and establishing solid and easy to understand slides. Throughout the next day, we worked further and finished our code and also finished the slides. Our group had thought of using HTML, Scratch, or Python, but we had decided on using Python because of its easy to use interface and easily understandable code. The arcade module is what we had chosen to create our game as it offers many easy to use tools and resources. Our problems mainly occurred with the arcade module and trying to understand all of its ability.
