Orbital Scrap Metal – The Video Game V2.0

Orbital debris is an ever-increasing threat to space assets such as Earth observation satellites and space stations and explorers. Your challenge is to create an orbital debris collection videogame web-app and imagine the possibilities of new companies that collect orbital debris and salvage the scrap metal to manufacture new products in space.

Satellite

Summary

Orbital debris poses a threat to satellites and space stations. They travel across the world up to around 17,000 miles per hour. Raising awareness is needed so that new and profitable solutions can be made. We opted to create a space shooter that simulates how space junk can be destroyed around the earth’s orbit and how these can be fetched to get precious metals.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Satellites is a space shooter where the player is tasked with destroying all space debris and fetching all of its precious metals to use them to build goods. Using these to fix the damaged satellites is the main mission. We recreated three satellites from the past and future for the people to educate themselves and understand the importance that they have had all these years.

How We Developed This Project

It is a space shooter so it is a simple game where we have a spaceship that shoots at asteroids. But we added some complexity to that simple formula. When you destroy the asteroids you receive some precious metals used to fix the damaged satellite. These metals are ores so if you want to use them, you need to refine every single one and them. After that you can finally go back to a broken satellite and fix it. Fixed satellites share some information related to it. You win when you repair all three satellites.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used NASA data to determine the amount of ores in each asteroid. Also, we took information from new and old satellites to educate the users.
