Planet, With People

Your challenge is to build on the Human Planet Initiative of the Group on Earth Observations to apply new methods for mapping attributes of human populations. How can Human Planet data from NASA and other sources be used to improve or update maps or other information important to a problem that concerns you? Design or create a tool or service to accomplish this.

ODSR (Ozone Depletion Substance Removal)

Summary

Our project concerns helping to combat climate change. We have developed a written proposal for a machine that can be manufactured relatively easily. This machine is called the 'ODSR' (Ozone Depletion System Removal.' Our team believes that by installing this machine outdoors or in space, it can benefit us a lot and potentially save lives in the long term, by removing pollutants from the atmosphere. It will prevent problems from escalating like global warming. We have concluded that the cost of this device would be around $5 million including all costs for materials, transportation, construction, and maintenance.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We have developed a machine that has built in fans and suction to absorb the CO2 in the atmosphere and release oxygen. It will run on solar power and is designed to automatically rely on the CO2 as its backup power source during the dark hours. The internal structure will be a vacuum to allow for manual controlled depressurisation and temperature adjustments.

How We Developed This Project

Our team was inspired to find a solution to climate change, because we are passionate about preserving our planet. We appreciate the beautiful ecosystems and species here on Earth, and we want to contribute to help save our planet. We approached this challenge with motivation and enthusiasm, it was a great team effort and bonding experience. The tools we used were : flipaclip. As a team, this weekend we have learnt about leadership, teamwork and listening to each other's ideas.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We have looked at past NASA satellite missions, and how they have contributed to advancing our knowledge of the upper atmosphere and aeronautics. We were inspired how satellites can forecast any storms that may cause disruption or are dangerous. This saves lives.
