Sleep Shift Scheduling Tool

Sleep loss and fatigue may lead to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety during many activities, including spaceflight. Your challenge is to develop an operational sleep shift scheduling tool that provides autonomous customization of a schedule for sleep, exercise, and nutrition to manage fatigue.

COSMO HEALTH

Summary

Cosmo Health Watch has been designed to improve astronauts’ comfort in space and to spend their lives in space, more regularly and healthily. Our system helps astronauts to spend their daily activities and basic needs like sleeping and nutrition more efficiently and healthily. It gives accurate results by taking advantage of measurements astronaut's instant body temperature, heartbeat, ambient temperature. In Cosmo Health App you can see all these results. You can see other astronauts' information to be aware of their health situation. According to the measurements, you will be able to see when the astronaut should have breaks, exercises, sleep and eat. It gives you notifications about them.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed a life organizer. Its function is like the brain in our body. Cosmo Health gives accurate results by taking advantage of measurements once a week. These measurements are:

  • The amount of heart rate at rest
  • Heart rate when they are tired (after exercises)
  • The transition time from fatigue to resting heart rate
  • Measuring muscular and neural data while sleeping with EMG (nerve and muscle motion measurement) sensor

Except for weekly average data, the Cosmo Hearth Bracelet measures,

  • Instant heart rate,
  • Instant body temperature,
  • Instant ambient temperature,
  • The instantaneous light intensity in the ambient.

The instant data is compared with the weekly average data to regulate their sleep, rest, nutrition, and exercise needs and activities.

Cosmo Health Application

Cosmo Health App is an application that takes data from the Cosmo Health watch.By using these measurements, the application gives notifications to you about the activities you need to patch (sleeping, eating, exercising, taking a break). You can also calculate your meals and calories by applying them. You can choose your meals according to the result.

Application’s interface gives you information about:

  • Health Stats
  • Instant and average heart rate
  • Instant body temperature,
  • Instant ambient temperature
  • The instantaneous light intensity in the ambient
  • The calories that you need and the calories that you burned.

Why did we develop that device and the application?

Life in space stations is not as efficient and healthy as ordinary life. There is also a high probability that astronauts will be affected by the circumstances. We have developed Cosmo Health Watch and its application to increase the quality of life there. We hope to make astronauts lives there more enjoyable and comfortable and help them to be more energetic, healthy, and productive.

How We Developed This Project

We are a 6-person team consisting of software developers, people who are interested in mechanics, and space lovers. We are also a team that wants to make astronauts life in space easier for the ones who are one of the best contributors to the future of Earth. When we consider our interests and purpose, we chose the challenge we thought would be the most efficient.

  1. Our coding languages are Python, R, Java, C++.
  2. We used Pandas and Numpy software systems.
  3. As hardware, Amazon Sage Maker via virtual server Amazon Web Service is used. Poisson regression model was run on Sage Maker.

And also some of the tools to make our device more efficient:

1) LITHIUM-ION BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

Cosmo Health Watch's battery was designed with a material that is 560 mAh lithium-ion to make the battery long-lasting. Lithium-ion enters service at peak capacity. It reaches 80% filling in 1.5 hours and 100% filling in 2 hours. During the day, the battery gives you an average of 18 hours of use. To avoid any problems with the dead battery, we have prepared an easily removable battery, so you can remove the dead battery in a little while and put it in to charge and immediately start using the new battery.

2) TEMPERATURE SENSORS

Cosmo Health has two temperature sensors that can measure between -60 and +150 degrees to get information about the ambient and the astronaut's body temperature. The first temperature sensor, which measures body temperature, occasionally checks to warn the astronaut of unexpected situations. Secondly, there is another temperature sensor that measures the ambient temperature if the ambient temperature increases or decreases to affect human health it gives a signal or a notification to warn the user.

3) VIBRATION MODE

There are notifications at the top of Cosmo Health, but the person may not always notice these notifications. For that kind of situation, we got a vibration mode. When the notification arrives at the Cosmo Health Watch it vibrates. And the astronaut recognizes it immediately.

4) TRANSMITTER

Cosmo Health has a transmitter to receive the data by the device to the application. It transmits the received data to the application periodically. In this way, it becomes a more effective result. You can learn what you need to do during the day from the application.

5) TOUCH SCREEN

We used an Oled screen to make the image more beautiful. We added a touch screen to the watch to use the Cosmo Health App easily and to avoid the need for an extra device. In this way, you can access the application from anywhere, in any way, you can learn the status of your ambient, your health, or your teammate.

6) PULSE SENSOR

Photoplethysmography measures optical heart. It measures changes in the size of blood vessels using green LED lights and a light detector. It converts these measurements into heart rate values. These values are correct by 97.6%. In this way, it both keeps the user's health safe and helps the user of the device to plan what he/she needs to do during the day.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We have benefited from the past experiments Nasa has done on astronauts. Obtaining this information directly from Nasa changed the course of our project. We have used the data of experiments on astronauts' diets on the nutritional advice we will use. In this way, we think we have created a correct decision mechanism. We developed a sleep planning advice model by using algorithms to improve to create sleep plans for astronauts in missions. Thanks to this process, we gave direct and more accurate advice to astronauts.
