Sleep Shift Scheduling Tool

Sleep loss and fatigue may lead to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety during many activities, including spaceflight. Your challenge is to develop an operational sleep shift scheduling tool that provides autonomous customization of a schedule for sleep, exercise, and nutrition to manage fatigue.

SleepQuality

Summary

The SleepQuality App is an innovation solution that will improve the astronaut’s sleep in a natural way. The astronaut’s daily routine may be difficult to adapt when they are in space, that is why they are going to use the app. The features that you can find are based on the idea of consistent habits will help anyone. The user will be able to control their sleep time, nutrition, exercise, light exposure level, and access the calendar to the next launch. To make the communication easier you can send the data to NASA in the app, with only one click.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We developed the “SleepQuality” app that helps the user to program their daily routine in a way that coincides with their natural biological sleep cycle. Routine scheduling is important to avoid fatigue, increased stress levels and other consequences related to the breakdown of sleep quality. The app will collect data from the BioMonitor or a smart watch and receive manual input by the astronaut, like his task’s schedule. In that way the center of control and the astronaut will see the statistics and receive advice to improve. Our goal is to help the adaptation to a new environment, making it possible to have a normal sleep schedule.

How We Developed This Project

We chose this challenge because we appreciate the work of the astronauts, without them it wouldn't be possible to realize new research in space. As we know, it is a very hard job, so we are doing our part to help. A big challenge for us was to convert the ideas into the prototype. When we saw everything start to come together, it was for sure our biggest achievement.

According to the challenge proposed by NASA, initially we look into bibliographies, mostly scientific articles, gathered data and then brainstormed ideas. We came to the conclusion that it would be nice for the astronauts to personalize their routine preferences. With that in mind we thought of an app that would reunite both inputs, the external one, provided by sensors (BioMonitor) and the internal one, provided manually by the user. To build the app we had to discover what an astronaut's daily life is like and what it would make sense for him/her to follow to have a good quality of sleep.

As for the tools, we used Figma, a collaborative design tool, to make our prototype. We also used other collaborative online tools as Google docs, Discord, and an online converter "Convert.com"

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used all the given resources made available by Sleep Shift Scheduling on the official Space Apps website to support our application. Were specially useful the data provided by NASA’s Fatigue Management Team and NASA Flight Surgeons. NASA’s specialists provided us with a lot of insights over the daily routine of astronauts; how their amount of sleep or lack of sleep can affect the crew’s health during spaceflight and what biological data is collected from the astronauts while they’re monitored by smartwatches or biomonitors. We tried include most of those items in the application: Dates/times of Launch/landings/docking/landings of vehicles to/from ISS; Dates/times of shiftwork schedules and nominal work schedule; blue light exposure and blue blocker glasses; number/frequency and duration of naps, melatonin level; use of self-hypnosis as a way to improve ambiental conditions; and suggested eating and exercise times.

Project Demo

The SleepQuality is a mobile solution with the following features:

In “schedule your next trip”, you can see the information of your launch and return day. Also, it has a guide to prepare yourself better in advance.

In “work schedule”, you can insert your work routine and decide the best time of sleep for you.

In “the workout”, you can see the best time to exercise according to your biological clock and set a reminder. You can select the duration and type of exercise that you will do. That way you ensure you will have a healthy day.

In “nutrition”, you have a type of food tracker, based on ISS FIT (the same as NASA), with suggestions to help you decide what to eat.

In “prepare the environment”, you can control the lights and listen to calm music. A good environment that induces you to relax, makes your brain understand that it is time to sleep.

At the end (status) you have a general view of your statistics and a calendar with your appointments.
