Sleep loss and fatigue may lead to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety during many activities, including spaceflight. Your challenge is to develop an operational sleep shift scheduling tool that provides autonomous customization of a schedule for sleep, exercise, and nutrition to manage fatigue.

Summary

This project ha summarized on-orbit sleep problems of astronauts and the effects of lack of sleep on performance. YURI ( Smart Band) and MARSH (Smart Eyegear): Yuri measures medical parameters like heart rate, BP, cortisol levels and melatonin levels. Any abnormalities in this parameter will send an alert to the fellow team members. Sound and light therapy are personalized to the user and provided through MARSH. Another feature is REM measurement through sensors in MARSH, which will analyse the quality of sleep. For CBT we have the feature of pre-recorded videos of family. Yuri and marsh can be scaled and customized for different sectors like logistics, manufacturing and healthcare.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We created YURI(smart watch) and MARSH(Smart eyegear).It has features that measures and monitors medical parameters through various sensors, alarming/ audio interface, personalized sound therapy interface, personalized light therapy ,AV/VR interface( Pre-recorded files for entertainment, REM Cycle to measure quality of Sleep . It is necessary to improve sleep quality that is linked to optimal work performance and maintain good health of crew members. With our product we will reduce the effect of sleep inertia, improve work performance and maintain health of the users. Health issues caused by sleep deprivation will be identified at early stages due to which overall survival risks of astronauts will be reduced which will be absolutely necessary in mars missions.

How We Developed This Project

 Our Team researched about each challenge given by NASA. But the sleep shift schedule tool challenge connected to us on a personal level. We are always sleep deprived while completing our assignments and during exams. We imagined how astronauts in space in an extreme and hostile environment with a high vigilance workload must sleep with high stress levels. Hence we took this as a challenge and started working on it. First, we identified the exact problems faced by astronauts and as a team brainstormed ideas that will solve maximum number of issues. We searched about potential therapies that can solve the sleep issues faced by shift workers and astronauts, and thus came up with YURI and MARSH(smart watch and smart eyewear). We went through research articles from NASA's open data source and also some other secondary data sources. YURI measures medical parameters like pulse rate, blood pressure, cortisol and melatonin levels. MARSH measures the REM cycle to determine the quality of sleep. YURI and MARSH work as a team to provide personalised light and sound therapy to improve the sleep quality and reduce the sleep inertia. It also assists with cognitive behaviour therapy. Additional feature of the devices is pre recorded videos of family loved ones which will keep the user motivated and help through dark times.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We have gone through the different data source/Open source/data sets available at the NASA website and utilised that information while making YURI and MARSH. Since our devices monitor the medical parameters and captures the real time information/data of Users/Astronauts and recommend them the appropriate working conditions in order to enhance the efficiency OF their performance and recommend sleep conditions for good quality sleep as per their individual body differences/parameters/health.

Apart from the other things/features which this device provide,the NASA datasets related to sleep shift monitoring of astronauts and the data YURI and MARSH captures from the astronauts in a certain period (weeks or months ) from the user, the device/products would recommend the best personalized solutions for the user as per the its experiential learning by using emerging technologies like AI/ML.

Since our products not only do the monitoring and control but also capture the real time information/data of Users/Astronauts and recommend them the appropriate working conditions and solution in order to enhance the efficiency of their working and for good recommended sleep as per their body conditions/parameters/health.
