Sleep Shift Scheduling Tool

Sleep loss and fatigue may lead to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety during many activities, including spaceflight. Your challenge is to develop an operational sleep shift scheduling tool that provides autonomous customization of a schedule for sleep, exercise, and nutrition to manage fatigue.

A relieved astronaut on a relaxed flight

Summary

Our idea is to make a mobile application that will organize the astronaut's daily schedule. it will ask the astronaut about the time and hours of the flight and it will organize his Daily Schedule at least two days before the flight to be ready. Our application will care about three areas they are sleep disruptions, doing exercises, and Healthy nutrition. There will be specific targets in the form of a to-do list, specific instructions like the degree of the temperature and the light, and suggested amount of and caffeine and vitamins like Melatonin. And there will be an area to ask the astronaut if he still has sleep disruptions, fatigue, etc and suggest the name of medicine will help.

How We Addressed This Challenge
  •  As written in the Sleep Shift Scheduling Tool challenge numerous applications minimize jet lag effects, provide exercise guidance, and provide nutritional guidance for weight loss. However, there are no applications that support all three areas of sleep schedules, exercise regimens, and nutritional guidance. So, we originate from our mobile application to care about these three areas.
  • The astronauts could experience 16 sunrises a day and that causes Circadian misalignment, sleep deficiency, and disruptions in circadian rhythm. the jet lag effects and the loss of sleep cause many hazards like on-the-job errors and chronic disease. So, it is important to produce a tool to organize the days of the astronauts because it can lead to significant, fatigue-induced errors and long-term sleep loss such as metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, and some types of cancers. so, we concluded that it is a serious case.
  • our mobile application will accompany the astronaut two days before the flight until he spends a week in his homeland after the flight. our application will qualify the astronaut's health and physical condition to be ready for his flight by providing him a daily schedule follow his health and physical condition and that schedule will be agreed with the training that requires international travel. And specific instructions help him to adapt to the new time zone during the flight. these instructions will include a specific degree of the temperature and light for a time to sleep and wake up. there will be also sport exercises and a calculated amount of caffeine and vitamins every day. our mobile application will organize the hours of sleeping and nap and the type of food and its Calories will be calculated.
  • the app will ask the user about the time of the taking off and the number of hours in the flight. depended on this information it will suggest to him if he needs to sleep before and during the flight and the amount of sleep.
  • We hope our app could help in this serious case. we hope our solution can make a difference and fill the need. because we know that How much the astronauts suffer, and our target is making their flight more comfortable so that they can perform their task without any obstacles.
How We Developed This Project

when we read NASA challenges, this challenge Caught our attention. and after we did our research, we realized how astronauts are Suffered. and there is not any tool helps them to organize their food, sleep, and their physical condition. so we decided to chose this challenge and produce an app can care about theses three areas before, after and during the flight.

We will use some coding languages to produce our app and we want to merge IoT in our code. Dart is our coding language which we will use to make our app. We will use also Arduino in our app to make the user can control the degree of the temperature and the light. To applicate IoT, we will need hardware in our project like an Arduino board, Bluetooth module, transistor, and others.

We faced many problems in collect our idea. we were not known how we will merge IoT in our app. Also, we are not experts in coding, we are still beginners. but we overcome these problems by researching on google and collect the information which will help us. And I think our great achievement is when we built our idea because we did not have enough information about this challenge and enough experience to produce our app.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used NASA resources in collecting your idea. And knowing from what astronauts suffer to help them during their flights. We took advantage of the seven methods that NASA used to help astronauts sleep.

We also used the travel healthy site to find out the 4 most important applications used to regulate sleep seizures during long travel trips and try to improve their idea.

Data & Resources

resources of NASA helped us a lot in our researches, we got many ideas from this information. they are:

  1. the seven ways to improve astronauts sleep
  2. The hazards of lost sleep and jet lag effects
  3. Diseases that can be caused by lack of sleep and insomnia in the long term
  4. Environmental factors that can affect sleep quality
  5. Biological Clock Misalignment Effects on Sleep for Astronauts
