Sleep Shift Scheduling Tool

Sleep loss and fatigue may lead to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety during many activities, including spaceflight. Your challenge is to develop an operational sleep shift scheduling tool that provides autonomous customization of a schedule for sleep, exercise, and nutrition to manage fatigue.

Own It

Summary

Own It is an application build to help people traveling to space (astronauts) or across multiple time zones to adjust and maintain their circadian entrainment.

How We Addressed This Challenge

People who travel across multiple time zones or simply the astronauts face a huge challenge of maintaing their circadian entrainment which cause sleep loss and circadian desynchronization that leads to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety.


With OWN IT application, that challenge will be addressed by helping an individual adjust a new circadian synchronization and maintain it throughout the whole trip. It will also take in account to what an individual has consumed as food and suggest him the type of exercises s/he shall be doing as to boost his/her metabolism.



How it works:

An individual is able to create a trip and specifies the kind of trip s/he will be taking [space trip or non-space trip]


Space Trip:

As a crew leader, s/he gets to invite other members to join the trip[on the app], and s/he has to include the trip times [launch, landing, docking or undocking time] with this the app generates the circadian cycles[sleep-wake cycles]. With that, when s/he gets to assign the member their duties s/he will divide them into teams with different sleep-wake cycles so that when one team is in a sleep cycle other team is in a wake-cycle and vice versa.


As a crew member,

- s/he gets to customize her/his sleeping schedule depening on the circadian cycle provided by the crew leader. Also before the customization of the sleeping schedule s/he gets to provide if s/he has any sleep disruptions, and s/he gets to set the sleeping environment as required.


- s/he gets to schedule for the exercise/workout session.


- s/he gets to specify the food s/he ate, so as the app to generate the type of exercises s/he will be doing on his/her exercise schedule and the amount of water s/he will be taking (if needed).


Non-space Trip:

An individual gets include the trip times [departure/arrival time or airport time], and the duration of the trip, like that the app will provide an individual his/her circardian cycle. And with that s/he gets the same procedures as a crew member from the space trip.

With those data, we were able to understand better how to approach the issues that were faced by the last astronauts and let us solve them accordingly.
