Lack of sleep is quite a problematic issue today particularly with globalization and the ability to work from anywhere. The worldwide COVID-19 outbreak seems to have exacerbated the situation as many are forced to work remotely or from home with many distractions making it not conducive to those who are not used to working from home.
So this tool aims to assist in that to calculate the recommended sleep and wake up times as well as certain important meal times like breakfast and dinner. It will advise and warn if the times are too early or too late for meal times. It will also recommend the 8 hour sleep times and to start sleeping a few hours after the last meal.
In a future version, it will generate an iCalendar file (.ics) that is able to import into devices calendars (e.g. Google Calendar) that can generate the alarms daily.
The inspiration came from several news articles describing the horrible consequences of lack of sleep, including historical cases such as Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, The Challenger Explosion and Exxon Valdez.
Initially it was intended to be hand coded fully however due to the lack of time, a rapid application development tool was used called bubble.io.
There was a bit of learning curve in understanding how this tool works, and in the end some basic functionality was achieved.
This article provided a lot of context for making the tool (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/research/astronauts_improve_sleep).
Other than that, a few medical recommendations were used to calculate the recommended sleep times (8 hours and 3 to 4 hours after the last meal).
