Sleep Shift Scheduling Tool

Sleep loss and fatigue may lead to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety during many activities, including spaceflight. Your challenge is to develop an operational sleep shift scheduling tool that provides autonomous customization of a schedule for sleep, exercise, and nutrition to manage fatigue.

Sleep Hackers

Summary

Our project is to develop an app that can make up an schedule based on the information that the user gives about themselves and what they are used to, but getting that as a reference generates optimized times for sleeping, eating and also for workout, in this way they can keep track of doing every activity and do not forget them, because in this way they can be healthy and take care about themselves. This is made by equations that determine the amount of calories that a person should eat, how regular the workout has to be, and also follows the recommended sleep hours for the determined age of the user.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Is really important for astronauts to be healthy when they are in their trips, and is easy to stop taking care about themselves when they do not have a schedule or something where they can keep track of their condition, what do they have to do at what time and do not forget anything, To help them with this problems, we developed this app named “Sleep Hackers”, in which we ask for determined variables from the person which include age, hours of recent sleep, gender, intensity of their workout, the app takes everything and generates an specific schedule where you can select at which hour you want to wake up, considering this it generates at which time you have to sleep, when you have to eat your meals, how many calories you have to consume, and also the hours for your workout. This is based on general formulas considering these variables and for the hours of sleep based on general recommendations applied to different ages and depending on the actual amount of average sleep.

How We Developed This Project

We realized that sleeping is something many of the people enjoy, but as well is something that is “malpracticed” in the sense that a lot of people don’t quite understand what and how certain factors really impacts your quality of sleep and therefore your capability of doing daily tasks.

We developed this project to give an optimized sleep schedule for the astronauts and to get a better consumption of the food, optimized for their own bodies and the workout that they are used to doing. But also can be used for every person that needs assistance on their schedules to take care of themselves, in this way, they can be more efficient and be focused on what they have to do.

We used several tools to develop this, first of all we did research about all the variables that we needed to consider and how to apply them to the specific cases of each person. After that, we made a code starting from zero in a programming IDE that used Python, Spyder and Jupyter in this case. We also got a way to apply this in an app that we developed. The idea is to develop the app until we have achieved a smooth and comfortable experience for the user.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

NASA´s information gave us a well fundamented way to start research and development of our project. The selected data gave us an excellent idea of what we have to achieve, and in this way, it was possible for us to start the research in several places about the recommended sleep hours, and the nutrition that each person needs, based on their actual condition.
