Sleep Shift Scheduling Tool

Sleep loss and fatigue may lead to reduced performance and an increased risk to safety during many activities, including spaceflight. Your challenge is to develop an operational sleep shift scheduling tool that provides autonomous customization of a schedule for sleep, exercise, and nutrition to manage fatigue.

Sleep Shift Scheduling tool

Summary

People all around the world experience disruptions in circadian rhythm, or the body’s natural regulator for sleep and wake cycles based on a 24-hour schedule, every day. This instinctual process can be disrupted by abnormal work schedules, extensive traveling between time zones, and by daily life for International Space Station crew members, who could experience 16 sunrises a day.And thus become ill and less productive this can be seen in normal life also while travelling across multiple time zones, but its intensity is less than that of an astronaut.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We have developed a mobile application for the astronauts to track their sleeping and schedule their time for sleep to avoid fatigue. The app developed provides provision for each astronaut to register individually and by providing their dates of schedule of space duty, the app automatically generates their daily schedule of activities : sleeping, exercise and food. Scheduling algorithm finds its base root in the scheduling sleep scheme method for astronauts followes by NASA. The app will give notification and alerts about the time to sleep and when to take melatonin and do exercises. It will also periodically asks the weight and memory related issues of the astronaut and analyze this data to check whether the astronaut is undergoing any sleep related disorders and if there is any mismatch from the given data, the schedule for the astronaut gets changed.

All real time update from doctors from earth is also possible in the developed app.

We have developed another application to minimize the effect of jetlag on passengers. By entering the normal sleep time of a user and from where to where he/she is travelling, the app creates a schedule for the traveler to minimize the effects of jetlag. The basic algorithm adopted for this, operates about the concept of time of minimum body temperature of a person while sleeping. The Open source code for developing this app can be find at https://github.com/me-geek-hari/JetLag.git

We have also created a website that presents various methods to tackle the effects of sleep disorders and we provide access to download the mobile application we have developed through this website:https://startrekz.wixsite.com/website.Both the applications can be installed through the website or can be installed through https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=11abUKNkCMgg42r5VJEpfSwzFquO9xVab

How We Developed This Project

This challenge has been selected due to application in daily life as well as in space missions. Both the mobile applications has been developed in Android Studio and the programming language used is java. The User Interface was created using Adobe xd and the website was created using Wix.com

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

NASA's data have been used to get the time schedule for astronauts They have collected data from 21 astronauts over 3,248 days of long-duration spaceflight on the space station, including 11 days prior to launch, and reviewed sleep logs to determine sleep medication use and sleep quality. And based on it a proper schedule was generated and from this data the algorithm for the mobile application has been created.
