Global Nominee

Virtual Planetary Exploration

Your challenge is to create interactive 3D models of equipment (e.g., planetary geology tools) that future space explorers can use for activities like exploring a planetary surface.

RB-D6 Concept

Summary

RB-D6 is your ultimate robotic buddy that will always be prepared for any task!Inspired by miners on Earth, this system has great versatility for geological exploration and its application is intended both for the remote space exploration stages, as well as for the early stages of planetary colonization.RB-D6 works as a remote exploration probe controlled from Earth or a spacecraft orbiting a planet, an as it is not a large robot, it is intended that several units can be deployed to cover a large area and explore various geographical points at the same time. Information such as geological characteristics and biological data will help to map and prepare the terrain or further human colonies

How We Addressed This Challenge

Based on records of previous missions and 50 years of exploration, different procedures and experiments have been developed to study a part of our immense universe. Therefore, our proposal consists of an explorer which is controlled remotely, that will provide a first insight of the conditions of the area that is under investigation.

Resources from the missions have pointed the importance of the environmental knowledge to solve the primary question “Is there life in the outer-space?”.

How We Developed This Project

CAD design and physical systems development expertise inspired us to imagine solutions that would assists future astronauts in space exploration .

We used an Astronaut Centered Design Process to understand and satisfy their needs and pain points.

We worked with Unity for the demo, and NX and Catia for 3D modelling. Coding was developed on C# and web centered in HTML and Final Cut for the edition of the presentation video.

Due to the time constraint, we faced pacing iteration between concepts and edition of the WebGL.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Some of the previous experiments such as Apollo 16th Soil Mechanics Exploration, Far Ultraviolet Camera/Steroscope, Microbial Response in Space Evironment, and Apollo 17th Heat Flow Experiment, Lunar Seismic Profiling, Lunar Atmospheric Composition Experiment that appear at each missions PressKits, as well as the several inphographies that can be seen at NASA´s web pages, regarding the Discovery, Curosity, and Perseverity Rovers were used to define the tools and characteristics of the DB-D6 system.

We explore the 3D repository to re imagine the models at nasa.gov
