Virtual Planetary Exploration

Your challenge is to create interactive 3D models of equipment (e.g., planetary geology tools) that future space explorers can use for activities like exploring a planetary surface.

Multi Tool Kit - Down The Load to Reduce Payload

Summary

Payload is the most crucial decision making criteria for every Space mission as it is directly proportional to huge cost for very increase in 1 KG/ Pound. Our solution is a dynamic, Multi consolidated tool with Screwdriver, Wrench, Spanner, Allen key, Scraper, bottle opener, ruler and many measuring geometry tools to save space and weight thus making it viable.

How We Addressed This Challenge

  • We researched and shortlisted below mentioned different tools.

Hammer, Spanners, Ruler, Screw Driver, Wire cutter, Protractor, Bottle Opener, Plier, Set square, Wrench, Allen keys, scissor, Wire Stripper, Scrapper, Nozzle Spanner

  • Grouped the most used tools along with shortlisting those that could be integrated together by considering feasibility.
  • Developed 3D models of multi tools.
  1. Multi Engineering Tool
  2. 4 in 1 Tool
  3. Swier Tool
  • These multi tools are very important because they fulfill the requirement for space exploration without compromising on the desired objectives to reduce payload of the space mission.
  • It also consumes less space as that is another big constraint.
  • These tools can be used in various maintenance work, different space operations and planetary exploration. Some of them can be 3D printed. So, in an urgent situation we just need 3D files which we developed.
  • By developing this project, we hope to reduce the overall payload & ultimately space mission cost.
How We Developed This Project

  • Our approach was unique to develop this project - First we did lots of brainstorming and research work on which tools are used in space exploration, How astronauts used it? -To fix the issue in machinery, for scientific experiments etc. How innovatively we can make unique tools by considering desired objectives? -To integrate various tools as much as possible..
  • We listed out some major useful tools and started to draw sketches. Then we try to integrate many tools into one tool. After that we designed in 3D modelling software.
  • We used Autodesk Fusion 360 software for 3D modelling to develop various desired tools.
  • All of us in the team worked together adding ideas to design and execute. We distributed work as per experience and proficiency.
How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

In our project, we used many different data for developing 3D models of various tools.

We used geology hands tool data from Apollo 16 mission file, artemis geology tools from NASA documents and we used some 3D cad files for reference purposes.

So, we found all related tools which are very useful for space exploration from mission launch to planet or space exploration. Then, we got a solution with some multitool integration idea by doing 2D sketching on paper followed by 3D modelling.
