Virtual Planetary Exploration

Your challenge is to create interactive 3D models of equipment (e.g., planetary geology tools) that future space explorers can use for activities like exploring a planetary surface.

Summary

With the evolution of space conquest, we need to anticipate the future routine of our astronauts.Since Apollo, constraints and technologies have evolved. Therefore, we must think about a space suit specially adapted for tomorrow's astronauts.Our solution, composed of a virtual assistant and a set of modules, will allow you and your astronaut to increase in efficiency.Each module can be attached to various spots of the suit and will send data to the HUD in the astronaut's helmet.Thanks to our solution, astronauts will become more self-sufficient and thus will reduce the space mission's cost.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The main goal of this challenge is to provide a tool that future space explorers can use for activities like exploring a planetary surface.


Our solution will help the astronaut along their exploration of planetary surfaces, no matter if they take place on the moon, Mars, or elsewhere.


He will get access to all the information necessary to carry his mission and the space agency will have real-time monitoring of the digital data.


It has the advantage to be easy to use and deploy, regardless of which space agency uses it.

How We Developed This Project

The first step of this hackathon was to study what was expected from our team and the shape of the final submission.


Once all the aspects have been studied, we thought of all the spatial topics (from exoplanet detection to spacial station and space travel) to be sure of the usability of our product.


For each thematic, we studied the linked issues to be sure of the necessity of our solution.

It quickly seemed that certain problems appeared in several thematic, which was the case for the question of astronauts' effectiveness in their future missions.


Once the issue was found, we went on to a research phase of solutions around this issue: "How can we increase the self-sufficiency and efficiency of your astronauts ?"


The solution of a virtual assistant composed of modules emerged as the appropriate solution for the different aspects approached by our problematic.


Then came the study phase of the project to evaluate the work time required and to distribute tasks according to everyone's competencies (3D, UI/UX, Web design, Communication, ...).


We started developing the project, each team on a specific task, with regular meetings to guarantee a nice continuity of the project.


We also relied on the feedback of our mentors, thanks to numerous calls with them. The calls allowed us to improve our solution as much on the technical aspect as on the commercial one.


Finally, we confronted various people from all professions with our project, to be sure to propose the optimal solution, vital for space exploration.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The space agency data helped us to prove two crucial points:


  • The necessity of our product
  • The feasibility of our solution


Thus, we used:


  • Feedbacks of Apollo missions run-throughs to study the problems that took place and the resulting needs.
  • Descriptions of future NASA's spacesuits to analyze the possible integration of our modules.
  • NASA's space programs to prove the actual needs of our product.
