"Jack Schmitt said that on Apollo 17 he had to keep brushing the dust off his visor," Dr Carlos Calle said. "By the end of the third moonwalk, his glove had so badly scratched the visor that it was difficult to see."
The dust is abrasive and can damage equipment and samples.
We develop a concept that prevent dust accumulation thanks to piezoelectric.
Requirements:
How does it work?
Piezoelectric is used to collect energy while the astronauts are walking or handling tools.
This force is converted into energy thanks to the piezoelectric.
The energy generated is stored to the backpack's battery then converter to be used by another piezoelectric to create slight vibrations that remove the dust.
We to aim to remove dusts from helmets and spacesuits at a first stage.
What does piezoelectric do?
A piezoelectric disk generates a voltage when deformed.
It'll collect the energy using piezoelectric installed under the sole of the boots then returned to other piezoelectric on the helmet. They will remove the dust by slightly vibrating the surface of the visor.
Testing: Assumed Acceptance Testing could include vibration, shock, thermal, all of which would need to be done in a clean-room
Further researches have to be done to
A similar concept could be applied to remove dusts from tools and samples sealing.
After reading all the support materials provided for our challenge, extra readings and brainstorming, we really liked the dust problem and finally decided to work on this problem from Sunday midday.
That was a very sort time to develop our concept!
Dust has a big impact on the quality of the astronauts sample collection. Removing the dust from their helmet and spacesuits will make the life easier and safer for them at a low cost.
We think our project can solves a big problem and can get inspiration to other industries (food and medical industries for instance)
Learning Gltf and Three.js was quite challenging.
We ran out of time to do our 3D animations.
GoDaddy Registry: website domain creation, we learned website publication (via FileZilla)
Gltf format
Three.js code
Unity
Blender

We learned the dust is a big issue in different ways.
It damages hardware, samples quality and sealing, potentially human beings could inhaled on lunar or mars modules that could be an issue specially on a long term period.
Explorer's tools are left on the moon in favor of more samples to study.
We learned the different kind of tools astronauts use to collect the samples and their materials (3D printing objects usage was quite surprising)
