Automated Detection of Hazards

Countless phenomena such as floods, fires, and algae blooms routinely impact ecosystems, economies, and human safety. Your challenge is to use satellite data to create a machine learning model that detects a specific phenomenon and build an interface that not only displays the detected phenomenon, but also layers it alongside ancillary data to help researchers and decision-makers better understand its impacts and scope.

Dot Project

Summary

The dot is a small system with a set of sensors that together monitor the amount of carbon gas in the location, detect smoke and also read the humidity in the air. Putting all this data together, the dot sends an alert via telegram, WhatsApp and / or via software to local authorities optimizing time (instead of waiting for a person to report the fire at the emergency center). Due to its small size, it can be installed on poles, in the middle of the most prone areas to fire or close to highways. Its sensors can be adjusted to send the alert according to the programmed amount of carbon.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The dot was developed with the intention of optimizing the service and mapping of fire spots. We think this is a very important step in the face of so many fires that we face daily in our city, in our country, and on our planet. We know that the project alone is not enough to change the world. We need to create awareness in the inhabitants who throw cigarette butts on the roads, and in the people who purposely set fire to vacant lots and plantations. The dot is capable of detecting and warning promptly before the fire takes on major proportions. We hope to one day be able to physically install the dot and one day to help the world suffer less from it.

How We Developed This Project

We chose this challenge because it is one of the main causes of health problems in the population of our city, in addition to being a very common problem in times of drought around the world. We started with the prototype and then we worked on the idea and how we could add and install it to make it work. We used Arduino IDE language, and parts we had at home to assemble the prototype.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We used data provided by NASA's Aqua satellite to identify the proportion of fires that have already occurred, so that we could add to our project. We believe that the dot can also aggregate information with the satellite database.
