Software uses NASA's solar flare predictions and determines if satellite can experience SEU. If so, system sends signal to the satellite control center to inform about the upcoming danger. Therefore, scientists and engineers can backup satellite data and prepare its critical systems for the harsh conditions.
This system could prolong lifespans of satellites, backup important scientific data, save large amount of funds spent each year for satellite maintenance.
We hope this system can be implemented in real working environment and bring huge benefits for satellite engineers.
We were inspired by Canada's CASSIOPE satellite SEU's data and were directed to the right path by our mentors. We mainly focused on developing a plausible concept. We spent most of our time researching information about the solar flares and their impacts to the satellites. The hardest problem we faced was lack of experteese in astrophysics and space engineering.
We used CASSIOPE satellite SEU events data to determine how often these events occur. Also it inspired us to take up this project.
In future we are planning to use NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory solar flare prediction data.
