Automated Detection of Hazards

Countless phenomena such as floods, fires, and algae blooms routinely impact ecosystems, economies, and human safety. Your challenge is to use satellite data to create a machine learning model that detects a specific phenomenon and build an interface that not only displays the detected phenomenon, but also layers it alongside ancillary data to help researchers and decision-makers better understand its impacts and scope.

ICYI-forecast

Summary

ICYI-forecast will be a web-app to predict and alert people about heavy rains in a particular region , for all 5 provinces of Rwanda.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The name of this web app "ICYI" was inspired by the Kinyarwanda word meaning long dry season.

This project will address 3 main challenges;

  • People living in slums or poorly constructed houses. (Habitat)

Government can help protect vulnerable living in slums by knowing months ahead of time that there will be heavy rains that can destroy their shelter and livelihood.

Furthermore, governments can plan head for their budget to assist vulnerable citizens are relocate them somewhere else, if need be. This will avoid deaths and economic inequality.

  • People in agriculture e.g farmers that need to know when heavy rains will come so they can prepare when to harvest. (Agriculture)

This web app will help farmers and anyone else involved in the agriculture sector to optimize their yield. By knowing ahead of time when heavy rains will come, farmers can know when to harvest and plan accordingly for the year.

  • People in the construction line of work or planning to start construction projects. (Construction)

When people are in the construction line of work, it is important for them to know when heavy rains will come so they can avoid their work to be flooded. This tool will help them to plan for their timeline of when they need to build a firm foundation so they can save cost and ensure their construction plan comes to order.

How We Developed This Project

Using UI/UX tools such as Adobe, I designed sketch diagrams of how the user experience would look like for the 3 different purposes that is Habitat, Agriculture & Construction.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

  • The JAXA 3D RAINFULL WATCH is currently used to map precipitation over time from satellites under the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission.
