Automated Detection of Hazards

Countless phenomena such as floods, fires, and algae blooms routinely impact ecosystems, economies, and human safety. Your challenge is to use satellite data to create a machine learning model that detects a specific phenomenon and build an interface that not only displays the detected phenomenon, but also layers it alongside ancillary data to help researchers and decision-makers better understand its impacts and scope.

A search engine for finding information about hazards

Summary

Our solution is a data content aggregator that gets data from the NASA Earth Science Disaster program to inform people about hazards and disasters around them

How We Addressed This Challenge

Our project addresses this challenge by getting data feeds from the NASA Earth Science Disasters Program and using Text Analytics and AI to extract valuable insight from this data. Our system the relays this data to users via a web client.

How We Developed This Project

We developed this project by identifying valuable data sources for naturally occuring hazards and disasters. We then used the IBM Discovery Engine to extract insight from that data and expose the indexed data using a search interface.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The NASA Earth Science Disasters Program website is a rich source of information about current and past disasters and hazards. It contains a wide variety of content: from web pages and images to PDFs and tables. This data is very accurate and reliable.
