Automated Detection of Hazards

Countless phenomena such as floods, fires, and algae blooms routinely impact ecosystems, economies, and human safety. Your challenge is to use satellite data to create a machine learning model that detects a specific phenomenon and build an interface that not only displays the detected phenomenon, but also layers it alongside ancillary data to help researchers and decision-makers better understand its impacts and scope.

Wildfire Hazards

Summary

Wildfire Hazards is a digital tool where you not only can find any information you need to learn about wildfires and every aspect this hazard develops, but also seek to raise public awareness about the impact that wildfires have, the scope, and the risk that this problem causes on the economy, human safety, and ecosystem of a country; learning with it strategies you can follow to prevent, be safe and protect the world of wildfires.

How We Addressed This Challenge

We designed a digital tool easy to use and all-age friendly that has all the necessary resources so that anyone using it can be informed about the impact and scope of wildfires. Taking into consideration that there are different cases in each country in the world, we give the user a personalized experience where they can find the risk their country has in terms of wildfires. Likewise, we include the main natural and human causes of these events.

In our project, the user can find a general description of the impacts that wildfires have on the economy, ecosystems and human safety. In the same way, it proposes solutions to attack this problem, educating users on preventive indications to avoid wildfires; provide them with information on what to do if they find themselves in this situation; and what steps they need to follow after this event occurs. Our objective is to protect human life and to aware the population about the importance of these security indications.

Why is important?

The purpose of this web page is to present crucial information about wildfires: the location of the principal wildfires, human and natural causes, indications to follow to avoid wildfires, during and after wildfires, and the effects that wildfires have on the areas of economy, ecosystem, and human health. With this information a lot of vulnerable people, animals, and plants can be safe before the worst can happen.

Future plans

Wildfires is a crucial issue and it can have a strong impact on the world, being this on people, nature, and animals, that’s why the information has to be more specific and detailed for each country. Another important objective to continue developing is a more interactive friendly web page, updating the page to have new and truthful information. We pretend to keep growing on the scope of the page, with the aim of covering more of the countries of the world.

How We Developed This Project

We decided to build this project to raise public awareness about the impact that forest fires have and the risk that this problem causes on the economy, human safety, and ecosystem of a country.

Economic impacts: Wildfires generate loss of tangible objects (wood, grass, fruits, etc.) that are resources used in the production of most goods and services, this loss affects the economy of a country.

Human safety: When firewood and other organic materials burn, the smoke produced has fine particles that are linked to respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, from eye irritation and a runny nose to chronic heart and lung disease. Exposure to particulate pollution is even linked to premature death.

Ecosystem impact: The effects of wildfires can be direct such as loss of animals, loss of vegetation and soil degradation, or indirect, such as range from soil erosion and pollution of the water to the fouling of dams and landslides. Animals respond to these wildfires without hesitation causing them injuries, death, immigration or emigration.

Problems and achievements

During the proyect we didn't have many problems as we thought; however, in our website we wanted to include an interactive map from the NASA resourses form SentinelHub Satelite. After trying several times we decided to try something different and we used images of the map and the location we wanted.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We use Space Agency Data to investigate the countries that have a great amount of wildfires. Without these information the team would not be able to identificated easily the countries with most wildfires, and it also will have been harder to analyze the causes and the wildfires that happen around the world. The users can also use this information to have the knowledge of the risks that their country can have about wildfires.
