Home Planet at Your Fingertips

Develop a user-friendly application or tool to discover, visualize, and analyze NASA Earth data for monitoring our home planet.

3psilon Vision

Summary

3psilon Vision aims to facilitate public access to diverse scientific information about the state of the planet. The information presented in an interactive and pleasant way to users of all ages has the role of arousing interest in the situation of the environment and how man contributes to the changes that the planet is undergoing. The website and the associated application make available to the curious a variety of amazing images, maps, graphics and photos collected from different sources to give visitors an unique chance to find in the same place information that otherwise would have taken too long to find and corelate.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The 3psilon Vision project consists of a website capable of offering users a unique experience of discovering the changes that the planet we live on is undergoing. In addition to the site, there is an application to facilitate access to information from mobile devices. Together, the 2 components work asa research tool for the general public who want to know more amazing information about the world we live in.

In a world where speed is taking over us, we often forget to look at the sky or nature around us at least once a day. Through this project, the 3psilon team wants to highlight the need to involve as many people as possible in protecting the environment, which is impossible to achieve without first allowing the public to see a unitary image of the impact that man has on his planet: hurricane pictures, natural disaster statistics, maps where glaciers have disappeared - all this can be seen in one place: 3psilon Vision.

3psilon gives anyone the chance to discover less-known scientific data that do not normally represent popular information but which, by their significance, have a great impact on our existence. Our project extracts the information requested by visitors from multiple sources represented by NASA satellites, astronomical observatories or statistical centers and presents them through the site and the application in a pleasant and easy to understand way. People from all fields and from all corners of the world can enjoy our solution thanks to the 3psilon Vision interface made in several languages of international circulation.

Through all this, our team hopes to increase public awareness of the danger in which the environment is and also to bring people closer to everything that means science, data and the incomparable beauty of nature seen in the most subtle and unexpected ways.

How We Developed This Project

The 3psilon team has a long history of participating in competitions that involve supporting the environment through various methods. The Home Planet at Your Fingertips theme proposed by Nasa Space App Challenge was the perfect opportunity to re-test the team's ability to innovate in order to achieve a successful project that would lead to a widespread awareness of the danger that our entire planet is facing.

Due to the multiple resources available, as well as knowing the close interaction between man and the Internet every day, our team decided that the best way we can bring so much information closer to people is by providing them with a flexible tool that can be with them whenever they want to know more about the environment or when they simply want to see the beauty of the Blue Planet. Thus, this tool has materialized in the existence of the site and the complementary application that really puts at your fingertips the most unexpected and interesting data about the state of the planet.

The knowledge of the whole team was tested in the project, the languages used being among others HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript (React), but we also expect the use in the near future of C ++ and MATLAB to analyze the data and to present reports and statistics deduced from all available sources of information. Limiting ourselves to making only software solutions was an additional challenge for us in our attempt to obtain as much value and significance from the information we already have collected with existing devices around the world (satellites, telescopes, sensors, etc.).

The multitude and diversity of resources that we can use also came with a great need for flexibility in terms of data formats that our solution is able to receive and turn into useful information for visitors. Even though we are still working to fine-tune every detail of data reception through the APIs provided, the 3psilon team can enjoy an invaluable experience gained from interacting with the multitude of sites and sources provided that pushed us to expand our technical knowledge and to surpass ourselves.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The resources provided by Nasa Space App Challenge represent the core of the 3psilon Vision project, which has the exact role of centralizing and promoting scientific data from as many distinct sources as possible in a friendly and easy to use format. The quality and diversity of the data found can only increase the quality of the entire 3psilon project and the fact that this data is constantly generated helps us to give everyone a precise picture of our planet.

Through the APIs provided, both the site and the 3psilon application make specific requests to the requirements made by visitors. Then, the data are expected and processed according to their type, last but not least being exposed as airy and effective as possible to easily understand the information presented.
