Our website serves as an intermediate between outsiders and the jargon-infested pages by organising different topics into cards. Each card would represent a category of interest that can be selected by users to derive a set of appropriate filters to retrieve data sets from the NASA Earth Data page that are most relevant to the user.
To aid outsiders further, each card comes with helpful descriptions and graphics to help them identify their interests.
Our Motive
We have always been interested in space agency data though we are by no means specialised in it. We tried filtering the dataset to get what we wanted, but dang, that was hard without the right knowledge. So, if someone had to do this, it had to be us.
Challenges & Achievements Along The Way
Most of us are unfamiliar with web development. As we were required to build a webpage, we ran into a lot of technical problems. However, through utter determination, we ultimately figured out how to direct users back to the pages where the data can be found.
Time management is also a challenging aspect of this hackathon. App design, information gathering and the prototyping have to be done within 48 hours. It is both physically and mentally challenging.
We presented NASA Earth Science datasets in such a way that outsiders can search for and explore datasets they are interested in. This searching & filtering method can potentially be implemented in other space agency web pages.
