- Describe how your project addresses this challenge
WW Air Quality uses the data provided by different NASA satellites and through an Android application with a very simple and intuitive UI. It summarizes the spatial data of an area and provides it to the user so that he can make use of them. In your daily life.
- What did you develop?
Our team developed a graphical UI that scrolls through a 3D model of the planet earth in which we can choose our study area and this will show a series of icons that will respond to the interpretation of data to have an approximation of air quality of the area. Once we select our area and press the button, it will show us different data of interest about that area such as: the coordinates, the amount of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide among others in order to demonstrate why the air quality of said area zone is of this or that quality.
- Why is it important?
The 90% of the population has health problems without even knowing it and air quality is directly linked, being an issue to which little attention is paid, preventive measures around the world are practically nil and people live daily with watery eyes, cough or noise when breathing.
That why creating awareness and providing the necessary data to take a judgment on the subject is of vital importance, thus preventing the development of diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, cancer and with it the shortening of life.
- What does it do? How does it work?
The application gives us access to the different NASA data through a 3D model of the planet in which to move to reach the area of interest which is identified with an icon according to the characteristics of said area. Once the location has been selected, the different general data will be summarized to evaluate the air quality of the area. Likewise access to different other data in order to evaluate the area manually, each piece of data will show access to maps that talk about the behavior of the area in question with respect to the information requested.
- What do you hope to achieve?
The purpose of the proposal is to educate people through the information provided in order to propose security measures that help us fight disease and improve the standard of living of users.
- What inspired your team to choose this challenge?
The idea was born as responses to developing allergies due to the conditions of the environment in which we live and not due to natural issues and see that it was not only happening in our city.
That was already a problem of greater magnitude, although still with hardly any measures and information to address the issue.
- What was your approach to developing this project?
The Project is aimed at providing information through NASA resources, to all people so that they can understand how the air behaves in their area and in this way you can take their measurements and have a better life.
- What tools, coding languages, hardware, software did you use to develop your project?
Tools: Android Studio, SQLite, Git, GitHub & MacOS with UNIX-like terminal.
Programming Languages: Java & XML.
Hardware: MacBook Pro late 2019.
Software:NASA World Wind for Android NASA Earthdata.
- What problems and achievements did your team have?
Problems: Not enough time to study and modify the code. Also not enough time to understand at all the Android World Wind algorithms and mechanisms.
Achivements: The development an Android App based in NASA World Wind to visualize data provided by NASA Earth Data with a friendly UI in order to make this data useful for the common user.
The code: The code from NASA World Wind was studied and analyzed to adapt it into our project, to develop the Software we had in mind. We also got some resource examples to make some functionality . Like BasicGlobe and Placemark picking.
The Data: The information from different galleries which we got access, such as NASA Giovanni and NASA Earth Data web page. They were used to study and through worldview.earthdata and its various layers it was investigated to be able to get data thrown from research in the application proposal.
