Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

Space-Based Solar Power

Summary

The world need to find new sources of clean energy. Space Solar Power gathers energy from sunlight in space and transmits it wirelessly to Earth. Space solar power can provide large quantities of energy to each and every person on Earth with very little environmental impact. The solar energy available in space is literally billions of times greater than we use today. The lifetime of the sun is an estimated 4-5 billion years, making space solar power a truly long-term energy solution. Solar energy is routinely used on nearly spacecraft today. This technology on a larger scale, can supply nearly all the electrical needs of our planet.

How We Addressed This Challenge

The reason behind the development is that it invest in aerospace expertise to expand employment opportunities in solving the difficult problems of energy security and climate change and it also bring the resources of the solar system within economic reach.

It is important to reduce the use of oil, gas, ethanol, coal plants and hazardous waste which is produced in tons each day.

It will provide true energy independence for the nations that develop it, eliminating a major source of national competition for limited Earth-based energy resources. It provides us energy 24/7 in huge quantities in regardless of cloud-cover, daylight or wind speed.

Reflectors or inflatable mirrors spread over a vast swath of space, directing solar radiation onto solar panels. These panels convert solar power into either a microwave or a laser, and beam uninterrupted power down to Earth. On Earth, power-receiving stations collect the beam and add it to the electric grid.

The concept to achieve behind the Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) project is to place very large solar arrays into continuously and intensely sunlit Earth orbit, collect gigawatts of electrical energy and beam it to Earth. The solar energy received on the surface could be converted into manufactured synthetic hydrocarbon fuels or could be used either as base load power via direct connection to the existing electrical grid or as low-intensity broadcast power beamed directly to consumers. Satellites could deliver energy around the clock, virtually all year long, because the sun’s rays are up to 10 times stronger in space and there is no weather-related interference or loss of sunlight at night.

How We Developed This Project

Space Solar Power could transform our future in space, and could provide a new source of virtually limitless and sustainable energy to markets across the world. None country has to be depended on other oil or energy reserved countries.

It needs efficient approach to supply significant power on demand for Navy, Marine Corps, or other Department of Defense applications by employing a space-based solar power system. This study was initiated by and prepared for top Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) management in part as result of the publication of the National Security Space Office's (NSSO) report "Space-Based Solar Power as an Opportunity for Strategic Security."

We have used lumen5 software to develop our project.

Problems:

  • In finding data of the project.
  • In how to make more attractive.

We have successfully completed our project with our hard teamwork.
