Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

GREENSTAGE

Summary

GREENSTAGE is an IT that raises awareness about the importance of environmental responsibility, and its social and economical impact for achieving a sustainable planet for future generations. In this project, all relevant information is brought to people in their native language through IT regardless of their social, economic and / or cultural status.

How We Addressed This Challenge

-What did we develop?

We developed an information technology solution focused on making people aware of environmental problems. Where the technical information of the investigations is taken to means of diffusion of easy understanding (web page, mobile application and radio wave). Additionally, the most important information is filtered and translated through deep learning to inform people regardless of their language.

Why is it important?

Our IT platform is important because it is an informative and inclusive tool that transcends barriers of space (territory), culture, and language. Also, it brings new ways of access for those communities who do not have internet access.

What does it do?

The platform informs the community about the importance of environmental responsibility by debating scenarios such as socio-political issues (of each country), scientific and research data, fauna, key facts, deforestation, loss of species, environmental impacts, carbon footprint, global warming, and relevant news and databases.

How does it work?

The project works through 4 fundamental pillars.

  1. App and website: The information is obtained from the databases of NASA (maps, geospatial diagrams, and graphics) and its associated agencies. The deployment of information on these platforms will be supported by deep learning processes, filtering the data by category, trend, repetition, source, and data synthesis. Then, graphic models are created to display information. Additionally, users will be able to interact and debate dynamically through forums and other tools.
  2. Kids section: Children can access a division developed especially for them. With teaching materials and resources that strengthen their opinion about environmental responsibility.
  3. Podcast & radio: To deal with the lack of information in the low-income population. People who do not have access to the internet can access radio transmissions based on the content of the app that is offered in their native language.
  4. GreenStage Recycling: To facilitate access to the platform in all regions, we are installing special machines at strategic points where people can redeem mobile data in exchange for recycling items.

What do we hope to achieve?

The project generates two impacts: the first is the dissemination of information to raise awareness among the population by making use of IT. The second is to create a mechanism that motivates people to recycle and allows them to have access to relevant information to take action in environmental responsibility.

Additionally, it establishes a bridge between NASA information and the world population, to encourage people of all ages to take care of the environment through projects that lead the beginning of a new era.

How We Developed This Project

What inspired our team to choose this challenge?

Recent events in recent years like the melting of the polar ice caps, bush fires, unusual temperatures registered in different regions, deforestation, show the need to take concrete and massive actions that promote the sustainability of the environment. It motivates us to work hard to develop a project that transforms existing habits and the way the world is perceived.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, software did you use to develop your project?

The following resources were used for the development of the project.

   Application software:

  • Mobile application: The mobile application was developed in the Framework Ionic using HTML, JS, and SCSS language for Android, Windows phone, and iOS operating systems.
  •  Web page: The web page was developed in Laravel using HTML, JS, SCSS, and PHP.
  • Recycling machine: Python software is the main language used for programming recycling machines.

Hardware:

  • Server: The use of a server is essential to interconnect the aforementioned platforms.
  • Recycling machines: In the recycling machines, we use Raspberry programming cards, barcode readers, Bluetooth modules, and power supplies to collect recycled items and also transfer the credits to the customer.

What problems and achievements did your team have?

The biggest challenge was to coordinate the tasks efficiently to develop the project within the established time. The potential that each member can offer has been fully exploited, from their professional training, experience, and skills in the management of applications and programming tools.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Our project compiles the information published by NASA on environmental responsibility, makes use of NASA TV, NASA Space Place as a means of disseminating information.

The information obtained from the NASA website and the other platforms were consulted and refined in such a way that opportunities for use were identified to be disseminated quickly through the platforms of our project.
