Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

To make the our only home habitable for all.

Summary

This project deals with some of the most pressing concerns related to our planet. It highlights environmental issues, their solutions and also the most effective ways of communicating them with people across generations. The main issues dealt are melting of glaciers; depletion of ozone layer;soil infertility; water crisis; water pollution. Sustainable development, awareness, responsibility are the solutions to these.

How I Addressed This Challenge

What did I develop?

A solution to major environmental issues and also ways for removing generation gap issues regarding the same.

Why is it important?

The earth is the only home that humans have as of now.It is also the only thing that belongs equally to us all.It is each of our individual responsibility to save it.If we do not act immediately neither would we be able to sustain nor would we be able to leave our planet sustainable for future generations.

How does it work?

The major cause of environmental issues are development. Since we need both development as well as to sustain sustainable development is the solution.

Rise in sea level:

Cause:Rise in global temperature

Threats: Every inch of sea level rise covers 50-100 inches of beach. If the ice keeps melting, global sea level could rise more than 20 feet. Hence coastlines could go under water and whole islands can disappear.

Solution:

  • Usage of renewable energy
  • Installation of solar panels
  • Usage of led bulbs

Ozone layer depletion:

Cause:Usage of chloroflurocarbons (CFCs)

Threats:

  • skin cancer
  • eye cataracts
  • genetic and immune system damage

Solution:

Usage of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) instead of CFCs.

Water Crisis and Pollution:

Cause: Misuse and wastage of water

Threats:

  • increased salinity
  • nutrient pollution
  • loss of floodplains and wetlands

Solutions:

  • Save water
  • Recycle water.
  • Advance Technology Related to water conservation. ...
  • Improve Practices Related to Farming. ...
  • Less Use of Chemicals in Farming. ...
  • Improve Sewage Systems. ...
  • Better water Distribution Infrastructure.

Below are some insights into how we can actually implement these solutions:

People use less of machines that are to be use manually and hence these require energy:

These sources of energy must be renewable. More and more wind mills need to be used.

Currently we produce the bulk of our food through industrial agriculture. A system which relies on large farms that mono-crop and use enormous amounts of fertilizer and chemical pesticides. Industrial agriculture is immensely damaging to soils, water, air and the climate.

Crop rotation, in contrast, is defined as “the successive planting of different crops on the same land to improve soil fertility and help control insects and diseases.” This way of farming is not a new practice, but rather a more ancient way of farming chemical-free, whilst maximizing the long-term growth potential of land.

Many countries in the world are becoming water stressed and we are beginning to understand that water is not as unlimited as we once believed. In most buildings around the world, essential water usage such as showering, washing hands and sewage conveyance is unavoidable.

However, the amount of water used for these essential services can be drastically reduced by more than 50% with the use of water-saving fittings and fixtures. Some examples of water-efficient fixtures include: low-flow taps and shower heads, dual flush toilets and toilet stops. These fixtures can be retrofitted easily and affordably into existing buildings or specified for new building projects.

Generation gap hinders sustainable development. Hence effective communication among all generations is important. We need the youth to make the decisions on developments along the older generations to take care of environment as well.

Awareness camps need to take place to catch the attraction of everyone regarding the harmful effects.

What do you hope to achieve?

I hope to achieve a planet sustainable for the present and future generation , an environment suitable for all living beings and the sense of responsibility of all citizens towards the planet.

How I Developed This Project

What inspired me to choose this challenge?

Environment plays an important role in the healthy living of human beings. It matters because it is the only home that humans have ,and it provides air, food and other needs. Humanity's entire life support system depends on the well -being of all the environment factors.I felt this was the most important of all challenges as it about existence( the primary need).

What was my approach to developing this project?

My approach was to combine human being's quest for knowledge and development along with combatting environmental issues caused due to these. Also I tried to find ways to bridge the gap between generations.

What problems and achievements did your team have?

I faced problems in inter-relating all the environmental issues to each other.

I had various achievements while completing my project.I learnt ways to control ozone layer depletion, water crisis, melting of glaciers, etc. Overall I could contribute my part to making our planet a more habitable place.

How I Used Space Agency Data in This Project

Data has been taken from 'Planet Health Report'.Major threats related to environmental issues like rise in sea level has been taken NASA Spaceplace . The solution of water fixture and crop rotation actually roots to NASA Spaceplace highlight of importance of water and food for all. Ozone layer depletion was taken study of Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer of NASA which also showed the ozone hole.
