Summary
Ocean Solution is a project that will show the level of plastic waste contamination in the sea in real time by means of an app. This app would allow us to obtain information at any time in order to act effectively against this environmental problem from anywhere in the world. The app will have computerized vision, perspectives and fluid animations.
How We Addressed This Challenge
This challenge could have a positive impact on society because it would contribute to solve such a complex and harmful problem for our marine ecosystems.
Ocean Solution is presented as an app that allows to observe the level of pollution of our seas in real time thanks to a satellite system integrated with simple and manageable dashboards and a complete geographic information system.
Ocean Solution would work hand in hand with the governments of each country providing real time information and encouraging the cleaning and disposal of plastic waste from the sea.
How We Developed This Project
We chose this challenge because we are very concerned about the amount of plastic waste that reaches our seas every year. According to UN statistics the world produces approximately 300 million tons of plastic waste each year and if something is not done about it by 2050 it is estimated that there will be more plastic waste than fish in the sea. On the other hand, according to reports from UNESCO every second more than 200 kilos of plastic is thrown into the seas and oceans where 70% goes to the seabed and 15% remains floating. Our challenge is focused on contributing to the solution of this environmental problem that represents a great threat to marine life and human health in general.
By using this application we will be able to make great progress in the control of plastic waste at sea. This application could help improve waste management systems and increase monitoring to prevent discarded plastic from ending up in the sea.
