Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

POND-ER (analytical way to use resources effectively)

Summary

Our project aims at INSPIRING the society to take action through REAL TIME COMMUNICATING the RESULT of the actions suggested by the authorities. First we get hold of satellite images of a specific area of a city and we check the water supply and surface area of the lake supplying water to that area. The second input is the satellite weather data through which we get the population data of the area and the depth of the lake. Using this data we determine how long it would take for the lake of the area's water supply to dry up due to consumption by the population of that area. Accordingly, our software would provide data and action to preserve the %water by society to sustain. The most imp

How We Addressed This Challenge

The challenge is to save water thus saving our nature, where we are aiming to inform the individuals of a specific area, how long it would take for the water supply of their area to dry up. Our team G-Force has developed a software that takes images from satellites: Nasa Gibbs, Nasa NOAA, Suomi NPP, Moddis aqua, and Moddis terra which also provides us with weather information and gets the data of population and water supply of a particular area. This would help the world fight water scarcity with exact area specific details and measures. Our project is important for the survival of both animal and plant kingdom as we are saving water by giving specific actionable guidelines for the time period. Every ecosystem starts with plants and plants are grown with water. Therefore, our project is vital for the survival of living beings. We are hoping to influence society by sharing the results that each individual can expect if they follow the oxymoron rather than giving advice and awareness. We are suggesting hard quantitative data about the solution and the action. This would create a psychological effect of motivating the people as they realize how small contributions can make a huge impact in preserving the environment for future generations.

How We Developed This Project

Sitting in Mumbai, within the top 50 most polluted cities its no surprise we feel the effect of pollution every day. From asthmatic friends leaving the city as its difficult for them to breathe to wearing a mask (even in corona times!) out of fear of lung cancer. Being stuck at home exposed us to the great wealth of information and data available online and through the internet. This inspired us to make a data analysis project to improve our very own city. We started with creating a list of all the challenges provided by NASA space app challenge and immediately crossed out the once we are inexperienced or incapable of doing. Through this process to sustain our plant challenge kept catching our eye since it was deemed as an interesting opportunity to learn and contribute directly to society, so we got to work. Researching all aspects of conservation water seemed to be the biggest problem of our day and age. Proceeding, we started looking into all sorts of API’s and other online resources which could help us contribute to this city wide problem while sitting at home (in quarantine). We divided the jobs amongst ourselves depending on our skills and specialties and slowly divided and conquered the challenge. Even though we cut it close to the deadline and tensions were high throughout it was one of the most bonding experiences and our slow and steady approach has hopefully paid off.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We have used Python to prepare our software and 2 APIS namely:

1) OPEN WEATHER MAP API

2) ZOOM EARTH API

Along with these we also used many libraries in Python such as:

NUMPY, SEABORN, REQUESTS, JSON, PRETTYPRINT, PRINT*, OPENCV2, GEOCODER, DATETIME, PIL, IO, MATPLOTLIB, SELENIUM, and INSTABOT.

Data & Resources

Firstly we took satellite images whose zoom values were incorrect which gave us great pains to analyze the image received by us. We set the zoom values by trial and error. After getting a proper zoomed image we had to crop the image into perfect pixels. The second issue faced by us was that we did not have information about which satellite gave which type of data, this made us spend several hours wondering why a weather satellite was not sending us images. We were not familiar enough with the APIS and the information we needed. Because we had to work from home due to quarantine, wifi issues stopped our work for some time. There were times when since we could not contact each other, we ended up doing double the work offline. One of our achievements was finishing the web scrapers which we spent almost 7 hours on. We thought it was successful multiple times but it failed. When it succeeded the happiness in our voices was astronomical (pun intended). Finishing each part of the project felt like success but naturally, the biggest success was when we finished integrating it and saw the finished output on Instagram.
