Summary

Synonymous with the ‘Blue Tick’ that is given to verified accounts on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, 'Green tick' aims to provide recognition and appreciation to people contributing to solving the environmental issues. We plan to appeal to the social media platforms to introduce a ‘Green Tick’ on their platforms for the users who strive to mitigate environmental issues and spread awareness in their communities.A green tick will not only motivate the existing environmental warriors but also help to make new ones. It will lead to great use of social media's power for a greater cause of humanity.

How We Addressed This Challenge

In 2015 alone, 5.5 million people in Singapore generated 1.73 billion kilograms of solid domestic waste, a major contributor being plastic waste. Singapore as a nation uses a large number of plastic bags, partly due to the prominent ‘tapao’ (takeaway) culture, most commonly seen in hawker centers across the island. At Green Tick, a non-governmental organization, we have been working towards an innovative approach to tackle this waste generation issue of Singapore. 


With social media's penetration in Singapore reaching an astounding 74% in 2017, major social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. present themselves as great ways to reach out to the masses. We at Green Tick truly believe in the stark power of social media, and our solution has been developed around it- with the intention of harnessing it for the greater good.


Green Tick is analogous to Blue Tick which is given to verified accounts on Twitter and Instagram. But unlike blue tick, green tick is in the reach of a common man. Thus, Green Tick carries a social brand value and makes the green tick holder responsible.


To be eligible for the badge of honour, a user needs to show his/her passion towards the environment through several ways such as spreading awareness about environmental protection through this/her stories and posts, attending eco-events organized by us or other organization working towards the same cause, being an active member of such organizations, or by donating towards this cause.


Our first target market to launch Green Tick will be the people of Singapore on Instagram. We have chosen Instagram as it is the most popular social media app used in Singapore. We will be using NASA and other space organisation data to help our green tick holders share credible information with their communities. With the presence of social media everywhere and its power, especially on millennials, this solution is expected to have a widespread impact all across Singapore.

How We Developed This Project

This challenge directly tackles the need of the hour - to increase environmental awareness. We felt it is the most important and useful challenge, and thus choose to go ahead with it. However, we were skeptical at first as we knew how difficult this challenge is, but after days of brainstorming we came up with Green Tick.


The biggest challenge for Green Tick is to make it an economical and sustainable organization. To sustain ourselves our revenue stream will include donations from our members, grants from the government, and revenue from fundraising events. Thus, we will be registering Green Tick as an NGO under the government.


Furthermore, one more challenge green tick faces is maintaining credibility in the long run. Partnering up with social media platform like Instagram in Singapore, will give tremendous credibility. However, to maintain the brand value of the green tick in the long run we will be incentivizing and appealing to celebrities in Singapore to publicize ‘Green Tick’ on their profile and encourage their followers.


With our marketing efforts, the ‘Green Tick’ is expected to become a trend that symbolizes social status through being eco-conscious, and everyone in Singapore would want to have it. Moreover, we will be organizing regular eco-events and to incentivize attendance of Green Tick holders to these events and further mobilize the community for this cause.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We promote the use of NASA and other space organisation data with our green tick holders. For example, we promote NASA climate data as one of the credible sources to our green tick holders, who in turn share it within their community. This way, we see that right information is being spread across the green tick community. NASA data is a very important source of information in the green tick community due to the variety and credibility offered.
