There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

ViridescentX - Expanding greenery

Summary

In recent years, our mother Earth has turned into an ailing planet due to the annihilation of the natural resource. As per the study by Pure Earth a non-profit environmental organization, about 200 million people get affected due to air pollution leading to chronic disease. To create consciousness about this critical issue, our team has come up with an application that marks the pollutant level and significance of afforestation. It has been calculated that; a mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. As an impact of this app, we hope people will start to apprehend the hazards of polluting the planet and will start to promote afforestation.

How We Addressed This Challenge

Earth does not belong to us; we belong to Earth. So, it’s our fundamental perturb to use natural resources sagaciously and leave the same for our future generation. The prime factor that agonizes while marching towards our goal is the perils of air pollution. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), in its Global Burden of Disease study, provides estimates that air pollution is responsible for 5 million deaths each year. It has been estimated that a human breathes about 9.5 tons of air in a year, which is roughly 7 to 8 trees worth. If so, do we have an adequate number of trees to meet the oxygen requirement for our emerging population? Then what about our future generation? Here our challenge is to communicate the importance of sustaining our home planet to people of all generations. To overcome this distress, our team has built an application which gives the worldwide data about pollution and water level. It also alerts people by mentioning the number of years they can lead a sustainable livelihood in that particular place. We need to manage the most limited vital resource in a way that best responds to the growing needs, and nurtures the health of the next generation. To create awareness among people of different age categories, we have mentioned the role of each generation in this endurance process for fortifying the environment. Through this app, we permeate the importance of afforestation and the necessity of preserving a clean and healthy atmosphere for everyone.


How this application works?


Due to the rapid development in technology, the data and information obtained are preferred to be displayed in applications that run on mobile phone or tablets. Also, the data must be simple clear and easily understandable for people in all age sectors. Keeping all these factors in mind, the application developed is developed. The application is an interactive dashboard that visualizes the life sustenance amongst the earth with accurately calibrated data.

The application divides the data based on countries and states. The country chosen in the prototype is India. The country is tinted with various shades of green to indicate the level of greenery in each state.

As soon as the cursor is hovered across any state, the dashboard pops up displaying various such as average greenery land available (in %), Carbon dioxide content (in gg), Nitrogen dioxide content (in ppm) surface water availability (in Bcm) and the approximate sustainability of life in that particular region. The data fed are lucid are clear so that people of age group can easily understand it.

The app provides a search bar on top to choose the region of preference. Various locations can be chosen to know the condition and sustainability of that region. This helps to analyze the most damage occurred in a region.

A chatbot is also present to guide and support people who are new to technology. The chatbot is customized in a way that all frequently asked questions are answered. It aims in assisting the user to know more about environment sustainability and importance of greenery for survival.

The application is extremely user friendly as it provides features for customization of themes in the app and it allows spreading the word by enabling share options via social media.


INSIGHTS


Team ViridescentX has come up with a revolutionary android/web application including a personalized chat bot by comprising Global Positioning System. This application will be extremely useful for everyone irrespective of their ages as the application has easy magnificent features.


In prototype


●       Both android and web application has been created, to avoid the usage restriction pertaining to a particular platform, thereby making it more convenient for the users.

●       The application comprehends the data of atmospheric pollutants and also incorporates proportion of natural gas throughout the world.

●       Sustainable livelihood predictions have been embraced, along with the required interpretations to make it easily understandable for the users.

●       This application is specially designed with supreme quality user interface and with extreme sensitivity to acquire the information of the data provided to the users.

●       A chat bot has also been included to guide people who are new to technology.

●       All the data obtained for atmospheric and weather conditions are from Sentinel 5P. This data is incorporated in this application by plotting it in topographic maps.


In Application,


In the fully developed application, all the features of the prototype are included along with added excellent features as follows:

●       Included GPS for greater accuracy through which the application will examine and scrutinize the atmospheric content and conveys the necessary data within 2km radius.

●       It will provide the real-time data by accessing worldwide with utmost precision with superior user interface.

●       The information of weather and proportion of natural gases are obtained with the help of Sentinel 5P, Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO2) and GOSAT for accurate information.


IMPACTS:


In today’s world, applications play a major part in the development of the society. Keeping that in mind, ViridescentX is expected to leave great impact in the society. Since the application is predominantly based on colors and simple data, people belonging to all age groups can access this application with ease. It will create awareness amidst people as the application transparently shows all the changes occurring in their living region, thereby pushing everyone to work together in improving their living condition. A small contribution from each individual can make a major impact on the environment. Atmospheric pollution can be controlled. This in turn brings down a lot of respiratory ailments. To make their particular region more greener people will tend to plant more trees. This afforestation initiative can restore ecological balance once again. The pollution level monitor in India indicated that if the pollution rates are brought down to 30% pan-India, the rate of death will drop to 50% of the current value. If this small value when compared globally can bring such a drastic change in the society, then definitely this application will support to bring down the pollution rate and increase greenery worldwide. 

How We Developed This Project

The application was built based on many data obtained from various organizations and satellites such as NASA, JAXA, GOSAT, sentinel 5P etc.…The application framework was developed using Techstackplatform which is a combination of software products and programming languages. The web application was built using HTML, CSS, JS and BOOTSTRAP. The mobile application was developed using Android Studio IDE with JAVA and XML coded in UI/UX. The minimum configuration of SDK 14 was used so that it app runs in all the android devices. The chatbot was created with the help of Collectchat API, the most used chatbot API for many websites. The map was connected and located to the geographic area with the help of the tableau software.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

The application was built based on many data obtained from various organizations and satellites such as NASA, JAXA, GOSAT, sentinel 5P etc. To monitor the gas levels in each region, topographic mapping of specific satellites which use specific instruments such as Interferometric Monitoring for Greenhouse gases (IMG) like the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (Tropomi), is used. Satellites such as Observatory 2, GOSAT and Sentinel 5P are specific in finding the amount of Green House Gases present in the atmosphere. The data fed in the applications were predominantly from these satellite recordings. In addition to this, the visual mapping and data from various publications were also used. 


Moreover, visual mapping by the above mentioned satellites and other real time data from the nasa earth data portal were used by us to study and analyze the current situation of india.
