Sustaining Our Planet for Future Generations

There is concern worldwide that environmental issues we face today will have an impact on future generations. Your challenge is to create a way to communicate the importance of environmental responsibility to people of all ages.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION OF SUSTAINABILITY CAN HELP US SEE A HUMAN-FRIENDLY FUTURE.

Summary

Our project portrays how visual, verbal, non-verbal and written communication can help children, young adults, adults and old people in understanding how important is sustainable development and how imperative it is for us to actually realise the crisis at hand and save our earth from complete destruction in the future. It helps people in understanding how they can actually play a part in saving the lives of not only the present generations but the future generations as well.

How We Addressed This Challenge

we developed various ways of visual, verbal, non-verbal and written methods of communication for children, adults, young adults and old people which will appeal to them and install in them a sense of environmental responsibility.

Effective communication is extremely imperative because it will help us at as a team and protect our earth from destruction. everyone wants to live a long and healthy life and if we help them in realizing the ways in which they can do so, it will be a great boon for us and the earth. If we don't realize our mistakes now and rectify them as soon as possible, we might not even see the next generations because the adverse impact of the environmental degradation will be so great.

These ways as given below first impart the basic knowledge of growing environmental concerns and then educates the people on how they can help in achieving a sustainable present and future.

FOR CHILDREN:

For verbal communication, the parents should take the initiative to communicate to their children the importance of planting trees, saving water, avoiding wastage of food and other resources. The basic values of not dumping garbage in the open, not causing pollution and other such harmful activities should be instilled in the children from childhood.

The nursery rhymes as a part of child’s growth should be more environment centric and should communicate to the the children the benefits and disadvantages of environmental pollution and its degradation.

The visual aids on the television programs should show cartoons planting trees, avoiding the use of plastic, stopping people form polluting the environment. It should also give glimpses of a healthy life in the future if the children perform tasks which have a good impact on the environment.

Games and competitions should be introduced in schools which focus on helping a child develop simple ways to conserve natural resources and use them judiciously in a controlled way.

Field trips should be held to take the children to non-governmental organizations focusing on sustainable development, agencies and firms who are especially assigned to look into the environmental problems so that the children can a have a basic understanding of the depth of the crisis at hand from an early age.

FOR YOUNG ADULTS:

Environmental science should be made a compulsory subject like English. Students should have a basic understanding of what constitutes sustainable development and what does not. They should be able to apply the things learnt in life to life basis.

Student led organizations should be set up within the school, local level, state and national level as well. Young adults like to have the feeling of being in control and starting something of their own. Since They like to influence people, they would actually put effort in an organization that will impact generations in the present and in the future.

Colleges should make it compulsory for the students to be a part of environmental organizations so that when they gain higher education and actually become developers, they develop something that is capital intensive yet environment friendly at the same time.

Young adults belonging to a particular region can be grouped together to start a crowdfunding or fundraiser to help clean the environment and aid the government and other private individuals and firms in establishing turbines, dams, wind farms and other plants which harness the power of renewable sources of energy.

FOR ADULTS:

billboards should be set up portraying the various regions of the world and how climate change has changed them.

bi-weekly drives should be held in their offices for cleaning the environment.

adults living in a particular place facing climatic challenges, say marine pollution, should take the initiative every month to clean the water bodies. similarly challenge based campaigns can be held in various parts of the world.

FOR OLD PEOPLE:

1.      Old people are mostly influenced by statistical data which communicates to them the depth and gravity of the situation at hand, in this case being degradation of the environment and working towards sustainable development. Newspapers should provide statistical data regarding increase in the level of carbon dioxide, increase in global warming, decrease in the arctic ice minimum and ice sheets, increase in the sea level, water pollution, air pollution, deforestation and loss of biodiversity. This data should be updated bi-weekly or monthly.

2.      Magazines, websites, newspapers should make a comparison between the quality of the environment when the old people were children and now. It will be a very effective way to reach out to them and help them know how much the quality of the environment has shifted between poles from their childhood to their old age.

3.      For verbal communication, every hundredth phone call should be assigned a caller tune. The caller tune should provide information as to approximately how many radiations have been released into the environment for telephonic communication required by the speaker as well as the health effects which can be caused due to the excessive release of these radiations into the atmosphere. Incentives or discounts can be given to the people on their phone bill if they reach hundred phone calls after a certain amount of time.

4.      Nonverbal communication can be carried out through plays and television commercials. Majority of the old people like children. Their appearance in commercials communicating the importance of sustainability and how they wish to secure a minimally polluted environment for themselves will instill a feeling of wanting to protect the children in the old people because they want to leave their grandchildren and families with as much as possible.

5.      The new generations should spend time with old people who are not at all aware of what is happening around the world and how drastically it has changed from their time. Young people should communicate to them the importance of conserving natural resources and the environment in order to provide them with the basic idea of the challenges which the future generations will face if the exploitative activities are not under control.

How We Developed This Project

Sustaining our planet for the future generations has become an integral and crucial part of our lives. We feel that we are living in a world which is excessively selfish. Majority of the people have the attitude of “I, ME AND MYSELF”. They don’t even bother to even glance at the harm which they causing to the environment. People want cars, air conditioners, heaters, mansions, expand their businesses, set up factories, industries and what not. They realize and are very well aware of the fact that they are helping the country in achieving economic growth, but what they don’t realize are the long term consequences of their actions to achieve short-term goals. They feel that they will die after sometime leaving a valuable mark on the economy and satisfied that they lived their life well and solved their purpose but then again they don’t realize that when they do, the planet which they will leave behind, will not be worth living anymore.

We, as the people call us GEN-Z, however, realize that. We know that the wrong judgements on the parts of the people which take place now, will ultimately put our futures in jeopardy. We are going to be the generation which will start facing the consequences of the irreparable damages done to the environment. We are concerned not only about our lives but of the future generations as well. How can we expect them to prosper when they will already have a destroyed life to begin with? We want to breathe clean air again, see the water bodies blue with abundant marine life, let go of the worry of possible health damages due to global warming, and many more.

We want to play a part in making our future inhabitable and so we decided to choose this topic. By developing ways to communicate the importance of sustainability to the people, we will step on a stone which will lead us towards a bright future. And even though we might not leave a big empire for the future generations to inherit, we are definitely going to be the generation that will start a movement of protecting the environment.

When we read the topic and grasped that methods of communication were to be developed for people of all ages, we first divided them into four categories namely children, young adults, adults and old people. we also observed that different methods of communication are effective for different age groups and each one is not necessarily influenced by the same method of communication. Furthermore, we divided the methods of communication into verbal, non-verbal, written and visual.

In order to develop our project, our team first studied the ways of communication and the various aspects and activities which influence children, young adults, adults and old people. We researched about how visual, verbal, non-verbal and written things can be communicated through those activities. The real challenge which we had to face was to develop effective and non-repetitive ways which are creative and informative. We wanted the methods to be serious yet user-friendly at the same time.

However, in spite of all the brain racking, we learnt about how effective communication can actually help us in securing a future not only for ourselves but also for the upcoming generations. If we try hard enough, we can convince anyone to adopt sustainable development.

How We Used Space Agency Data in This Project

We will be using surveys conducted by NASA in our project to create events.

Surveys of the Earth environments and their geographies are readily available to us, which we can analyse and apply in order to correctly raise awareness about and educate others on sustainability. For example, in a coastal area, the way to sustainability would be a route different from the route to sustainability in a desert area, or a mountainous region.

Using this information in our project, we can create the perfect events, etc with the help of passionate individuals, both amateur and professional.
